I'd like one for a DD, but seeing what prices people are getting for a beater-ish 10-15 year old TDI with 200,000+ miles on it is pretty crazy.

why would you want a diesel? A 45 mpg diesel is basically the same cost per mile as a 33 mpg vehicle that burn gas...

That's sort of what I was eluding to, once you factor the price premium for a diesel engine under the hood it's pretty much a wash (although one could factor that back into resale value).

You did make me dust off the ole calculator. For purely fuel costs at current prices, it looks more mid-high 30's to equal that 45 mpg of diesel. In the current new vehicle market, I agree, it seems there's plenty of gasoline vehicles that can match that. But older, 10 year old vehicles, there's not so much out there (I got that a 44 mpg '01 TDI Jetta gets a little over 1 mile per dollar more than a 35 mpg '01 Civic). But once again, that's pure fuel cost comparison, not total real costs.

Regards to the cost... Yep gas will be cheaper but as the old adage of your going to drive it ALOT diesel is better. Show me a similar vintage gasser with 300k and still running strong, sure there are a few but not the norm like it is for diesel

When I bought this car diesel fuel was cheaper than gas was. The car has been paid off for about 3 years it costs me about $30 for an oil change every 10,000 miles and $20 for a fuel filter every 30,000 miles.
I can't buy a new gasser and do better than I am now.

I have had my 00 for a couple of weeks, haven't even had to fill it up since the night I picked it up. It has 286000 on it, hoping for at least 45 mpg.
