AKC is only the pedigree, no health certifications involved. Most AKC breeders will give a health guarantee when you buy the pup, but that normally means to trade the pup back for a new pup from a new litter.

Actually mutts are generally healthier than purebreds, because in order to get the AKC standard dogs the breed has to have some inbreeding, which makes genetics defect more likely. This is why most Dalmations are deaf, Bulldogs and some other breeds have joint problems, etc.

Winning at a show is only so they can 'prove' that that dog best met the AKC breed standards. If you can get a dog to be an AKC Champion then the puppies sell for more $, the sperm of the stud is worth more, etc. But it means little if you only want a pet and aren't actually going to show a dog, unless you really want to assure yourself that the pup will be a good looking example of the breed. This is why I normally go for AKC puppies, I want a bulldog that will look like the AKC standard. I have no more desire to show a dog, I get all my pets neutered, but I want a good example of the breed.

I got my puppy this spring from another member here. Sadie is a Gordon setter and a very loving dog. One year old this past memorial day.

well my pup is 4-5 months old and he is starting to go into the front yard by the road no matter how many times i yell at him or smack him lightly but enough to get my point accross.
he still goes by the road and like to run into the neighbors yards.
i want to get a shock collar but is he to young?

Sounds like you need an invisble fence, not a shock collar.
