Default quote about the first Gulf War

I found this interesting.

Quote:
I would guess if we had gone in there, I would still have forces in Baghdad today. We'd be running the country. We would not have been able to get everybody out and bring everybody home.

And the final point that I think needs to be made is this question of casualties. I don't think you could have done all of that without significant additional U.S. casualties, and while everybody was tremendously impressed with the low cost of the (1991) conflict, for the 146 Americans who were killed in action and for their families, it wasn't a cheap war.

And the question in my mind is, how many additional American casualties is Saddam (Hussein) worth? And the answer is, not that damned many. So, I think we got it right, both when we decided to expel him from Kuwait, but also when the President made the decision that we'd achieved our objectives and we were not going to go get bogged down in the problems of trying to take over and govern Iraq.
This if exactly how I felt about the end of the first Gulf war, and how i still felt at the start of the second, and still feel now.

But part I found most interesting is who said it. Anyone care to guess?

gotta be a big shot, either Schwarzkopf, Colin Powell, or George 41

I think at the time it was the right choice, and its oversimplyfied to say the war was to "get" saddam versus install new regime or free democracy etc.

Also think that in the comming 10+ years he was out of control, wouldnt allow UN inspections and was generally up to no good. I dont think it was something that could be ignored much more than the 10+ years we collectively dragged our feet. He shot at our planes, stalled inspectors, denied passage to "royal compounds" built civilian homes over military installments in the dessert and jsut general evil crapyness. Ohh and killed hundreds of thousands also. I dont think the wait was a terrible idea .... his time was up though. If he was in new zealand or some pacific island acting a fool no one would care, but with his oil $$$ and his agenda, and psychosis he needed to be ousted.

I guess only time will tell if it's worth it. I don't think it is. I don't think "getting Saddam", "new regime", "free democracy", or oil is really worth all the lives lost, and I'm fearful that whoever eventually ends up ruling Iraq might be worse than Saddam.

Ohh and those hundreds of thousands killed? Most of that happened in 1988 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Anfal_campaign) so we were about 14 years to late on that one.

yeah one dumb college kid .... a college kid whos not nearly as smart as he think he is. I was not familiar with the quote but new it had to be a significant player at the time of the first war in order to be worthy of starting a thread. If al frankin said it or some other jackass it would not be worthy of a new thread. DUUUUUUR. Ohh well shows what you know. :tonka:
