Ruger SR9c is my compact. A lot cheaper then the Glock and the little brick of a glock didn't feel right in my hand.

Find a range that has multiple choices in the compact 9mm and see what you like best. They will all go bang.

I hated Glocs for a long time because of the stereotype, they were in every gangsta rap track from the 90's...... My buddy had a Model 19 (9mm) he was selling so I shot it and it just felt right. I am accurate, its light comfortable and cheap to shoot. I have carried that gun for 4 years now.

I am looking online for ammo prices and the .40 and the .45 ammo are both $28 a box for 20 and the 9mm is $25.

I would much rather pay the $3 a box for the bigger bang

I bought two 50 round boxes of .45 fmj range ammo for 19.99 each the other day when i bought my XDs (which i love) the other day. You can actually get it slightly cheaper if you get directly from them (optimized ammo out of lansing area) and buy in bulk. They are reloads but i have ran 50 or so rounds through with zero issues.

Not as cheap as 9mm but not outrageous either.....i actually wanted a 9mm XDs but Springfield is dragging their feet releasing it and i got impatient lol

IMO since you are a novice shooter start with a 9mm. A 9mm +P JHP will do just as much damage as a .45 ACP will. Arguing about stopping power with handgun rounds is pretty useless until you start talking .357 or .44 Magnum rounds on up. If you can't hit crap with a .45, that extra weight and energy of the bullet won't do anything for you.

Get a 9mm, buy a bunch of ammo since it's cheaper than .40 and .45, and shoot the hell out of it.

Wally World is about the same price. Winchester white box is $23.97 for 100 in 9mm. I think the Federal is even cheaper.

This x19023472345

You sure as hell didn't start out shooting rifles with a .300 Win Mag. It's for a reason.

There's not a damn thing in the world wrong with 9mm and you'll be able to afford a lot more ammo and range time to actually learn how to shoot your pistol effectively.

I am not really concerned with ammo prices but thanks everyone for the advice!

I have shot my buddys H&K .45 and I was decent with it. I plan on going to the range and testing a few guns!

23 is a compact. Also the compacts fit my hand better than the full frames. The gen 4 is nice with the dual recoil springs and also the different back strap combinations. Problems with the late gen 3 and gen 4's have mostly been worked out eventhough there was never any problems with the 45 acp or gaps for that matter. I will say the M&P and The xdm with the small backstrap feel very nice in my hands. The gritty feel of the M&P goes away after a thousand rounds or so. The new M&ps are starting to see the trigger they use in the shield which feels better. For carry you might want to look into the xds or a m&pc also. I wouldn't get stuck on the 45 unless you have other guns that are 45 or that is what you feel most cofortably mentally with. 9mm up all have very good self defense rounds. I just love to shoot 357 sig. I own a glock 32 which is 357 sig, a M&P .40 with a 357 sig barrel, a xdm9mm bi-tone and a trp 1911. Each feels totally different and each recoils differently. Up here at shooters indoor range you can rent a variety of guns where 10 dollars gets you 10 shots plus price of ammo. Doesn't say anything about age for rental so you might want to call ahead if you try a place that does this.

I own many glocks. They are good tools. To me a gun is like a tool. Some are better than others. They shoot ok not as well as a high end pistol but better than a Taurus. Best thing I can say is shoot many .45's before you buy one. I have a glock 30 it's hard to conceal at times. But that's why it stays where it does. Good luck with whatever you get.
