yes, lane 1 only is yours. lane 2 is his. turing into the 2 outer lanes by either of you is not quite legal, but done all the time.

also, many mi left turn arounds are wide to allow big trucks to fit through them, but still considered 1 lane.

If he was already in lane 2 when you attempted to enter it, he had every right to be pissed off at you.

This. I read this in the paper, but haven't been able to find a quote online.

The general idea was if the approach is one lane, the entire turnaround is one lane regardless how wide it becomes.

The light at the turnaround turned green, so we both left it at the same time.

I know this is true as well, however no one treats it that way at all. No one enters the closest lane either and then changes lanes. Everyone just goes into the lane they're going into.

If the Michigan left had two "lanes" in it turning onto a road with two lanes, the inner gets the left lane and the outer gets the right lane. So if there are two Michigan left "lanes" onto a road with four lanes, it would make the most sense that the inner lane gets the two left lanes and the outer lane gets the two right lanes.

Makes the most sense to me, regardless of it it's legal or not.

Why are you still trying to defend yourself? You were wrong and now you have announced it on a public forum. That makes you double dumb.

I may be wrong, but I've been searching since yesterday and I still can't find the Michigan law that pinpoints this. There is even disagreement in this thread about what is the right way.

Has anyone gotten a ticket or know of someone that has for using the outside lane of a Michigan left and turning into the rightmost lane? Probably not.

I'm probably going to write a letter to MDOT asking about this.

You're probably right, but there also probably wasn't a car already in the lane.

The dude that picked the lane I went into wasn't in the lane before me. The light turned green, we both accelerated although I accelerated faster into lane 2. He also tried to go into that lane with me there or slightly there before him.

It is illegal to make a lane change in a turn. Make the turn, check that the lane you want to get into is clear, signal, then proceed to make the lane change.
I have seen plenty of this, people crossing over into the next lane during a turn.

So he tried to go into the lane he should have gone into and had to avoid your jack rabbit starting lane jumping non signaling ass?

I get it....

You need to use the proper hand signal while turning.

I agree. Even without hearing the other guys story, if this resulted in an accident and I was the police officer, I would give Grease Monkey a ticket for improper lane change and would have written him up as at fault for the accident.

I have an idea. From this point on in this thread ONLY, lets just tell GreaseMonkey what he wants to hear.

Yes, GreaseMonkey, you are rite and the other guy is a total jerk. You are wright, if there are 2 lanes in the turn around and 4 lanes on the road, you get the inside two. If there are 5 lanes, you get the inside 2.5. Its a simple equation listed in your Sears driving book. (# of Road Lanes / # of Turn Lanes) = # lanes you have the right of way. Its simple and like you said, it makes sense. I am going to make stickers with the equation so everyone can put them on their dash board and do the math before they turn left.

I think he should get 2/2 of the lanes.

I'm not saying you guys are wrong or I'm right. I'm simply saying that you guys are stating things I can't find on MDOT or MSP websites as far as traffic laws go.

I don't want to hear that I'm right. I want to hear what the law actually states in regards to Michigan lefts. I sent an e-mail off of the MSP website for clarification.
