Default Driving Question: Michigan Lefts

Here's how I understand Michigan lefts. I need confirmation on this as apparently a dickwad this morning thought I was in the wrong causing him to continually try to run me off the road.

You have a Michigan left turning onto a road with four lanes. Three lanes continue going straight, and the right most lane is a right turn lane. While stopped at the Michigan left, you can be on the inner section of the Michigan left or the outer section. The inner section can turn into the two left lanes, while the outer section can turn into the right two lanes. Am I correct?

Not sure I fully understand the intersection you describe. But when turning you most maintain the lane through out the turn. Then after completing turn you can change lane.
Being correct or right won't save you all the time.

If he was in the inner turn and it was a marked 2 lane turn you had right to the right turn lane.
Except when they look like double turns but are just wide singles

So when the light turns green? How does the right most lane turn left around the first three lanes going straight???

I think I get what your saying. I don't think it's a written rule but more of a common sense sort of thing. You were in the right, not the asshat who tried to run you off the road

Many intersections do, yet people still don't know what to do

Like 8ptbuck said, pretty sure it's more of a common sense/common courtesy (sadly, neither are very common anymore) thing than an actual law. Most people who don't do it are the assholes trying to cut into traffic to get 3 spots ahead but still stopped at the same light.

I'd be fine with that if people weren't complete fucking morons when it came to using them.

Ok, here's a graphic.

At the Michigan left, you have lane A and lane B.

Lane A can turn into lane 1 and 2. Lane B can turn into lane 3 and 4.
I was in lane A and turned into lane 2. Dickwad next to me was in lane B and tried to turn into lane 2 at the same time I was. Maybe I'm the dickwad, but this is always how I have understood Michigan lefts.

Turn and stay in your closest lane, you needed to be in 1 and not swing wide. What if it was 3 lanes? Do you get the middle or him? You did not win the lane lottery with him and have to split it 50/50

You should have turned into the closest lane, but at least you gave the other asshat something to fume and yell at the clouds about.

You are supposed to turn into the closest lane, then once there, turn on your blinker to move over a lane. Unless you have a dune flag, then you can do what you want.

You messed up. You should have turned into lane 1, Your buddy goes to lane 2. There are no "common sense" or courtesy rules for driving. The rules are defined, not left up to interpretation.

Nice job!
