Looking at the Michigan petition, there are signatures from Arizona, Florida, New York, Oklahoma and I'm sure others. I would think those would be weeded out.

You don't read much American history, do you? How many recent protest marches have resulted in armed conflict with the authorities? How many local seats of government have been the target of violence, threats, or even slightly angry mobs? Any assassinated politicians?

All I see and hear is a lot of Internet noise from the very tiny but vocal minority.

That's my worry. Sure, it's a great thing to send a message to Washington that people are not happy but it really doesn't matter, the election is over. States suceeding from the Union would only weaken North America. Currently we are still strong (strong enough is a question) and it would be very difficult to attack North Americal en mass. Start splitting us up, especially border states and we are more vulnerable.

Civil war would be worse. Our own citizens would die, the economy would collapse and it would not recover in my lifetime. Now, building a fence around Detroit, New York, Chicago, LA, etc is another thing.

I say good riddance to the states that want to leave the union. Just be sure to reimburse the Federal government for any federal funding they've received over the years (highways, education, housing, medicare/medicaid, R&D, etc.) and don't forget to pay the federal government for any federally owned land you plan on taking with you (BLM, DoD, National Parks, etc.).

It's a symbolic thing. If those petitions had MILLIONS of signatures you could take it a hell of a lot more seriously.

But on that note... Under your logic the federal government would need to reimburse every citizen for every tax dollar they ever collected from them throughout their entire lives.

Exactly! I'm not a political person, per say, but I AM patriotic. Sorry to the people who don't like our president, but he WAS, after all, elected by the people. Coming from a supporter of state government over federal government, meaning the state should have a lot less federal involvement in the way it governs itself. I have no problem with a state wanting to succeed. A coupla thoughts, far as I know there are no states officially wanting to succeed, these are unelected, common folk signing this petition. Signing the petition is a serious thing and should not be done just to make a point, signers of the petition are suggesting they want to give up their citizenship of the US. The states wanting to leave the union would have to payback their share of the national debt, to refuse could lead to war. The states succeeding would have to have a way of defending itself, especially border states (national guard maybe?). They would have to have a strong economy by itself, natural resources, trade agreements, new currency, etc. There would be a lot to consider and doesn't look advantageous, maybe Texas could. Did I miss any thing?

Fun fact that would also make texas the 41st largest country by land mass at around ~676588 km^2. Right in between Burma and Afghanistan. Causing USA move down from 3rd to 4th, just behind China.
