You want an example of unjust enrichment? Pharmasuitical companies. They take products that in the end cost pennies to make, and charge end users hundreds, some times thousands for their product. Shop around for your next script, you will see what I mean. I had one antibiotic that was NINE pills, and cost $1200. If I ordered it through a canadian pharmacy, the same pills cost $250. If there is that much profit in one script, imagine how much money they rake in with all of the pills that are dispensed in the US.

Here are some comments from a review of his book:
I still see it as shortsightedness. Most people understand that bankers, CEO, others in the business world will be very well paid. Ethics are not as black and white as many people try to believe, but as long as everyone is prospering no one will complain and the business can continue to prosper. But as soon as some of the people start to feel like they are getting left out that the problems start. People call for more regulation, then those being regulated start looking for ways to get around the regulations, and it spirals down into a mess.

The products may cost pennies to make, but how much did it cost to develop them?

Don't like the way business is run? Solution; become an employer, not an employee.
Note, I am an employee so I roll with what rules my employer puts in place.

Not to mention what laws and regulations may drive up the price in the USA.

But those same development costs should be even across the board. It's clearly price discrimination.

EDIT: I found an article that may have some answer to the price discrepancies.
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_a...in_canada.html

Bottom line: They fukc us because they can.

I do not believe the vast majority of business owners/managers deliberately overcharge. Most people have no idea what is involved in operating a legal, profitable organization. As Jim said, go own your own sometime and you will see things in a vastly different light.
How much money is invested in the research and development of each new drug that is brought to market? Do you expect the company to have cash reserves to take care of patients if there is a problem down the road? Where does that cash come from?
I do not understand the thought processes that bring on this mentality that everyone who runs a profitable business is taking advantage of the "little guy". Is it the entitlement mentality? Should I work for free so you can have what I have and not put forth the effort? Your situation in MOST cases is a result of the choices you have made not the fact that the Man is holding you down.

That's not what I am saying at all. I understand R&D costs. Hundreds of millions go into research and that has to be factored into cost plus legal, advertising, FDA, and then profit. Zook's argument of costs pennies to produce I disagree with. But the example of a drug costing $250 north of the border and $1200 here is price discrimination.

Lots of hidden costs. I had an opportunity to buy a bar in my 20's, after seeing what the true costs were I knew why it was for sale. The property is now a Walgreens.

Yes, because all of the research and development they do to invent those little pills is free.

And the fact that after x number of years (for some reason I think it's 7 but not sure) they have to make/compete with the generics and the profit on those pills become greatly reduced.
They have R&D, advertising, manufactoring, distribution, taxes and I am sure additional costs that no one thinks of when they get the pills from the pharmacy.

My question is what is the cut off between trying to better for yourself and greed? Everyone seems to have a different opinion. My opinion is to stop worrying about what others have, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, and make your own life better.

in most cases millions and millions. and let us not ignore the cost of litigation after production starts.

(my sister inlaw is a chief statistician with abbott labs and acts as a FDA Liaison as well - honestly don't know her actual title as she doesn't keep her linkedin profile up to date)

You my friend are on the right track. Good question with a very hard answer because it is just that, an opinion.

I talked to a guy yesterday and he was whining about not being able to find a job for 2 years and I see 3 help wanted signs within 2 miles of his house. Yes,I know he may not be able to make 50K a year, but it is about getting out there and doing something to move forward.

You could define that as many things, greed, lazy, entitlement, etc etc. Doesn't matter how you label it to me, it all contributes to the current state of fuckdness that is the US economy.
