Default garage heater help

I have a sterling hanging forced air/LP furnace. Last year all was fine, this season I turned up thermostat, and nothing happened. I assumed I had a bad thermostat. I bought a new basic dial honeywell, same type I was using before. I unhooked the 2 t-stat wires from the old t-stat, jumpered the two wires and the furnace kicks on like normal, ok now I know wiring/furnace is good. I wired new t-stat, now furnace wont turn on again no matter what temp setting. It is a basic 2 wire setup for thermostat, I tried switching the red/white wires just to see if maybee something got switched, still nothing. I called honeywell tech support, they were no help, said it has to be a wiring problem. It works when jumpered, doesent work with thermostat. From what I can tell the t-stat just makes or breaks the circut. Is there anything else the t-stat does, what am I missing here?
