the motor took a shit in my work truck and i can buy it pretty cheap, it is a 04 f250 with a 6.0. i also have a rusty 96 with a 7.3. is it too much of a nightmare to put the 7.3 in the 04 and keep the 04 trans and t case?

Manual or auto trans? Either way it will be a nightmare. Not saying it can't be done, but it probably won't be much fun......
