Talking Scramblers just follow me home...

I was in Northern Michigan (Onaway) this weekend celebrating the holidays with my in-laws. My soon-to-be sister-in-law told me that there was a guy just a few miles away who had a Scrambler that he'd probably be interested in selling. Needless to say, it followed me home. :D

As you can see from the photos, it has been sitting for several years (we actually had to cut a few small trees that had grown up tight to the body). It's a single-owner vehicle, and the guy used it as a daily driver for several years. Eventually, it turned into a hunting vehicle. When the starter finally went, it got parked, and the rest is history.

The complete scoop:
  • Single-owner 1982 Scrambler
  • Iron Duke 4-cyl., T-5 trans, Dana 300
  • Wide-track axles w/3.54 gearing (bummer...I thought they'd be 4.10s)
  • Factory soft top (shot, but the hardware is all in-tact)
  • OEM rollbar-mounted spare tire carrier
  • Unmolested dash (still has the original radio)
  • Rear quarter panels look decent
  • Frame is crusty, but repairable IMO. It'll need some TLC, though.

I'll be parting it out after the holidays (when people have $$$ again). It's still up North, so it'll probably be a few weeks before my father-in-law can trailer it down to my place.

Anyway, here are the pics. Notice how a couple trees grew tight up to the vehicle.

I know, I know. The frame on this one is fairly crusty, though, and it's not worth as much complete as it is parted out (with the Iron Duke motor, too). Some of the parts will live on in my Scrambler project, and probably in the SOA charity Scrambler (see sig).

If you'd like to save it by buying it for $3000, you can send the check payable to Craig Emenaker. Thanks.

craig, did you know about this scrambler before hand, or do you just go on little weekender trips with a flat bed or tow dolly just in case you find and old jeep or scout ?

I had no idea that this Scrambler existed until Saturday night. My father-in-law towed it back to his place with a tow strap (I'm glad the brakes still worked), and will bring it down to me on a car hauler within a few weeks.

I tried to pay my sis-in-law a finder's fee, but she wouldn't take it. She can be a stubborn pain like that.

The Scrambler was definitely a nice little stocking stuffer for me.

Craig

P.S. - I do need to drive MUCH further for my purchase from last week ('78 CJ-7 w/T-18 granny low trans). I bought it on eBay, and need to drive to Missouri to get it within the next couple weeks. I'm going to flat tow it with my tow rig ('93 Buick Roadmaster, baby). :tonka: It's not nearly as convenient as Michigan CJs, but the driveline will go in my Scrambler.

That's absurd. I'd like the 78's axles, please. :tonka:

I assume (based on the little laughing emoticon) that you're kidding, Mark, but if you really would want 'em (NT D30/M20), I'll be selling them. I'm only using the motor/trans/t-case/wiring for my Scrambler. PM me if they're something you'd want.

Yep, the 3.54s... my 81 Iron duke also had those. I too was hoping for 4.11s, but then I would have had to use a AMC20 instead of a nice Dana 44...

You, my friend, are forgetting dmcjeep. He buys WAY more Jeeps than me. I wonder if he'd be interested in officially becoming my "mentor"???

Sorry to disappoint you, Jeepinlunatic. Relative to some of the special-edition/unique vehicles I have had, this (still limiited-production) Scrambler is a little "blah", I guess.

looks like a good investment craig. i will be heading back to talk to that guy about the Tuxedo Park CJ-6 this spring, to see if he will change his mind and will let you know if anything happens. I also have a few other jeeps I will be taking a look at in the next couple weeks, there are a couple early CJ's and SJ's, if I dont end up doing anything with them you are first on my list to contact about them. If you ever get in the area and want to do some wheeling let me know, id be glad to show you some trails.

Thanks Brent! Let me know what you find out about that Jeep collection. At this point, I'm hoping he holds out and doesn't sell...I'm cash-poor right now between the holidays, and the '78 CJ-7 & '82 Scrambler I bought. Let me know, though. Things should be much better in a couple months, though.

I definitely want to go wheeling sometime up North. The Unlimited is stored for the Winter though, and I doubt that my '93 Buick Roadmaster would do well on the trails.

Cool. BTW, it looks like you're in Grand Haven. You'll have to stop by sometime to talk Jeep stuff.
