stick or auto? if it is a stick is there any chance the vehicle rolled backwards while in gear? this same scenario happened to a saturn i had to diagnose. someone backed into the car and pushed it backwards. afterwards it wouldn't start. apparently the timing chain tensioner is controlled by oil pressure and since it had slack in it rolling the engine backwards made the chain jump several teeth.

A quick peak inside showed broken chain guides. It also looks like some one was previously under the cover. A layer of silicon is present along the steal gasket. And the gasket isn't even sealing anything...

This one appears to have 2 chains, one upper and one lower. The bitcha about it is they are on the back of the engine. Looks like its time to call the junk yard.
I realize they are completly different motors,I worked at a vw shop for 15 yrs.I was using the five valve for cyl as an example of how pricey vws are to repair in general.
