Default At&T up north...how's the coverage?

My folks live out in BFE outside of Gaylord, close to Lakes of the North. They've had Nextel forever and it works great where they live. The problem is Nextel is going away next spring/summer.

So far we've tried Sprint and Verizon. Neither of them work well in that area. T-mobile has no native coverage up north, so that gets ruled out.

The only thing we haven't tried is At&t. I bought a cheap GSM phone and a go-phone sim to try, if it works then they're fucking set. They don't text or use data, so none of that shit matters to them.

But...how is At&t 's coverage up there as a whole? Shitty? Uniform?

I have an At&t iphone and we go up to the Houghton Lake area, and service is HORRIBLE. My boyfriend however has verizon and he's got perfect service.

I'm west of there but Verizon is/ has been a little better than AT&T. But neither have total coverage. I very rarely have more the 2 1/2 bars(in Cad. TC i do). I'd like to find something that would give me service on the rivers I paddle. Most rivers are dead spots.

Generally ATT used to have alot better coverage around this area. There are a few spots where they still do, but I am very happy with verizon.

I'm north of Gaylord, in the Vanderbilt/Wolverine area, and service is hit or miss on the back roads, but Gaylord now has 3G. They have pretty decent service considering all.

Once you get to Gaylord, coverage for everybody is spotty at best unless you are in a populated area like Petoskey or Cheboygan, or are within 5 miles or so of I-75.

My brother has AT&T and I have Verizon, over the last couple summers of us being up north at my parent place, when we have travelled neither one of use has had an advantage in signal no matter where we go. I am honestly surprised that Nextel worked well, it was awful up north when I had them years back.

Nextel going away? Didn't Sprint buy them? Wouldn't Sprint just take over Nextel's towers after it ends?

My sister has AT&T.. Says the service up here sucks.. Also have friends with AT&T, they hate it.. I have Verizon and have signal almost everywhere, with no issues.. I think the only place it didn't have signal yet was in the UP by Tahquamenon Falls.. Sprint did buy Nextel but they are doing away with the IDen network, so if you have Nextel you are surposed to go into a store and pick a sprint phone to switch to..

I would love to have property without cell service, tv, land line- when I get away, I want to really get away.

As far as I can tell each company has a region they dominate. Verizon has Florida. Sprint/Nextel has much of the south. I do a ton of traveling and have tried a few carriers. My experience is that AT&T is far from perfect but seems to work near everywhere. I rarely have no service. And this is huge to me.

A drawback is international. Their rates seem to be all over on that. As much as $1.25 per text. A 40 minute phone call in British Columbia cost me $200.00

AT&T does not have unlimited net available, and is more money than the others by 15-30%. But, I'm pretty happy all in all. I'm not sure about coverage in the exact region you are asking though.

Had Verizon (Alltell before them). On ATT now, over 2 years. Travel (camp) all over the State primarily north of US-10.
ATT coverage is as good as Verizon for voice. Each has weak spots in select areas. Some of the remote campgrounds we hit, ATT will be so-so and VZ will be just that tiny bit better; others are the opposite, most are the same.

ATT is generally EDGE data (the slow speed) for 99%, except some major areas. It will be better by/in 2014 as they are dropping EDGE spectrum to light up 4G; whether that means it will be 3G where it's currently EDGE, don't know.

I plan to switch back to VZ shortly as I believe they have better data speeds in northern MI. That's based on anecdotal evidence from folks with VZ phones that I check with at camp (and not just ask, have them show/use their phone). If we got 3G everywhere we get EDGE now, I'd stick with ATT.

Camped near Honor this weekend and had 3G. Easily able to full screen NetFlix while tethering off the phone.

Basically, your screwed

2 years of driving all around northern lower michigan, and eastern UP; take it from me. AT&T sucks ass up north, very little service in the boondocks, and really crappy service that you do get in the cities. Verizon is the only cell carrier that gets pretty good reception in the northlands

As another note here:

I was in the U.P. about a year ago on a bike trip. Went all over and saw postings at bars and shops notifying everyone that the main service up there (Alltell?) was switching to AT&T and their bills would reflect that.

I found my ATT&T to be better than Verizon around Silver Lake. It's worse than Verizon around Harrison. Seems about the same along the major highways.

I already pay too much for AT&T. How much do you have to pay for the extra T? And is it worth it?
