Default Help me plan a roadtrip to Mackinaw...

My new girlfriend is wanting to take a aimless road trip in a couple weeks and she has never been north of Detroit. We are from the Toledo area so I wanna take her all the way to the bridge and back in one weekend. I have family in Grayling that I plan to make a stop on our way north and I was planning on taking 23 south down the east coast on the ride home.

So my question for all of you who live up that way is this... Once we leave Grayling and head toward Mackinaw are there any "must see" things along our way on up I75 or on our way south down 23 till we hit I75 south again near Bay City? Lookin to show her some cool things or find some cool stops along the way.

23 is scenic, but not this time of year, gotta wait until the end of the month for full color. It's a long, slow trip, lots of stop n go traffic. Nothing really cool, unless you cross the bridge, and take a ferry from the St. Ignace docks to the island for the day. Visit the forts in Mackinaw city, then drive down 23 for the color tour. 23 south will dump you out on I75 in Standish, there are some tourist traps on 23, like in Oscoda, and Tawas. The trip up the West side is cooler for looking at neat stuff, following 31 or 131 up and through Petoskey and into Mackinaw from the east.

By the end of the month the island will be a ghost town. You will have run of the place, and it's the only destination up there worth a visit. I would call a couple hotels on the island, you can probably stay at the Grand Hotel for less than $100/night

m119 this time of the year is a must see. mackinaw island this time of the year is cold and wet and boring with nothing to do, its an island with no cars. if you want to see the colors head up here soon. otherwise aimless is always fun when on the seasonal roads.

Just checked Mackinaws site and sounds like that weekend is their closing.Have a few package events that weekend that are out of my price range.

We are saving the seasonal roads for winter when my truggy is done and we can drive that back up. This trip we just taking my 2wd f150 couch-on-wheels.

So a ride over the bidge is for sure. Anything to do or see on the Upper side of the bridge or should I just do a u-turn?

While in Grayling, take a canoe trip from Stephan Bridge Rd. to Wakley Bridge Rd. Jim's Canoe rental is right at Wakley Bridge, and can hook you up.
It's going to be beautiful on the river over the next few weeks.

Hartwick Pines State Park is a great hour long hike throught an old growth forest.

Do some two tracking through the Jordan Valley and stop at Deadmans Hill, in Mancelona Twp. Google it.

Call of the Wild in Gaylord, MI (Make sure you get to Jay's Sporting Goods in Gaylord too.)

The Cross in the woods, at Indian River is kinda neat to see.

Sea Shell City, if it's still open.

The Dixie Bar in Mackanaw City is a good place to eat.
Or, the Pasty Shop on the West Side of the bridge right before you go over it.

Salmon Fishing at the Foot Site Dam, 11 miles West of Oscoda should be in full swing.

Thanx Ed! I looked a few of those up and I might try to squeeze them in.

Other places to eat along the way would be great also.

Lots of colors on the way back from Baldwin last weekend. I wouldn't wait too much longer or you're going to miss them, I'd say peak is probably pretty close right now.

Tons of shit to see, depends on how far you wanna drive......soo locks are only an hour north of the bridge, taquemenon falls is only a little over an hour north of the bridge and worth the drive.

Skip the east coast color tour, find a way to travel parts of M-22 north of manistee/ludington up to empire, then take traverse to charlevoix to petoskey and then head up through the tunnel of trees 119 from harbor north to the bridge.

May take a little longer to get to the bridge, but a much nicer drive, stop at shorts for a beer, or many other cool micro brews in traverse, stop at my cousins restaurant in Cedar just off m-72 at the rustic cedar in for a great meal. Head up the coast to charlevoix/petoskey for some good views, hit up the tunnel of trees which should be in full color right now.....stop at boyne highlands to watch some DH mountain bike racing both saturday and sunday, I'll give you a beer.

I know the alpena cheboygan areas are pretty cool, but overall the west side is cooler IMO.

Falling fast with the rain and wind.
Took a cycle ride yesterday to see the colors. It was very windy cars going northwest(115) had leaves stuck on their grilles. Looked like Halloween decorations.

That place is kind of a U.P. bound shrine. I can't drive by it without stopping.
