Default Utility Locators

I'm trying to find someone to locate an underground electric line from my house to the garage. Miss Dig won't do it because it's a "private line" after the meter. How am I suppose to go about this?
I'm located in Grand Rapids, MI.

contact a local electrical supply house and ask them. the longer they have been in business the more likely they've fielded this issue before.

Around here there is a company called Underground Technologies Inc. (UTI) They are who Ms. Dig uses instead of having their own lackies. You might wanna google underground locating services and see what you can find.

Hopefully I can find one to rent. Keep this going, it would be great if someone could do this on the side for me.

Lakeland Electric out of GR can do this for you. They do a bunch of work at my employer and do good work. Should just take a few minutes.

Call miss dig. Tell them you are putting in underground sprinkling. They will ask who's the contractor, tell them you're doing it yourself. They will ask if there are any areas of specific concern. Tell them the northeast corner or what ever corner of the house your barn is on. Don't tell them anything about the private wire that's post meter. I called them yesterday, they were out this afternoon.

You can always witchy stick it. If the other locators use metal flags pull one up and put a 90* bend in it for a handle. Walk slowly across the area and be amazed.

(disclaimer) if you can't make the witchy stick work it's a sign of homosexual tendencies

I've done this in the past, mostly for sewer and water lines. I use two brass coat hangers bent into an L shape with them held in each hand. Walk perpendicular over what you want to find. They will cross each other over the line.

Be aware that you will also get tree roots, so cross the suspected line path in multiple places along the route.

I'm in Byron Center, send me a PM.

I have the equipment if you have a chaser wire.

All underground gas lines or electric lines should include a 16THHN or equivalent to use as a pulse wire.

If you don't have a chaser wire, if you can disconnect the wire (not sure what it is feeding), you can pulse it and locate it.

You guys are a little confused about miss-dig. Their people do not do the locating nor do they set up a contractor to do it. Miss-dig just looks up what utility companies are in that general area and they notify them that you will be digging. It is each utilities responsibility to either send out one of their people or get a contract service to do it. So the utility is only going to locate their own lines. There isn’t just one guy who comes out and finds every buried line regardless of who owns it.

All I know is Monday I called Miss Dig. Tuesday I was out there until 2pm. I swung back around 630, and Gas, cable and telephone had been marked. Something tells me it was 1 person that came out, not 3.
