Default Ghosts, or "where do Christians go when they die"

I was watching Ghost Hunters tonight (which always reaffirms my belief that there is no solid evidence of ghosts), when I heard a woman say that the souls of some men who died a horrifying death could not rest until the truth about the incident was known. As a Christian I thought it was strange that someone believed that peace after death came from some police officer solving a mystery rather than through Christ's salvation for your sins. My wife has often speculated that when we die we go to a limbo and wait for the second coming of Christ. Although, as you will see below; the opposite is actually presented in scripture. Those who believe in Jesus as their savior will go straight to heaven while those without salvation go directly to hell an await Judgement at the second coming of Christ.

Perhaps the most direct answer comes from Jesus on the cross speaking to the thief next to him:

Luke 23:43 "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."

I then found another sermon which I thought I would share. It paraphrases biblical teaching, but really hit a note with me.

“Where Do You Go When You Die?”
"This is how I imagine Jesus beginning His response to this question:
“The answer to this question depends upon another question: Who do you say that I am? If I am your Lord, I give you the same answer I gave to the thief next to me: you will be with me in paradise. If I am not your Lord, I give you the answer I will give those at the last judgment: Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. I tried to make this as clear as I could when I visited in the flesh.
“You live in an age that loves to muddle these two crystal-clear, divergent paths: ‘We can’t really be sure about these things; all religions teach virtually the same thing; everyone goes to heaven; hell is a leftover concept from an unenlightened, puritanical age;’ etc. All of this is said in the vain hope that there are will be no consequences for your decisions and actions. I tell you the truth: there will be judgment.
“No one in the Bible talked about hell more than I did. I talked about this not to make you afraid; I talked about it because I love you. I talked about it simply to rescue you from turning away from me. But there’s one thing I talked about more than any other: the Kingdom of God.
When I talked about this subject, I didn’t limit it to what happens when you die. I talked about it in terms of what happens when you live. Many of you are worried about getting into heaven. I’m more concerned about getting heaven into you: Right here, right now. Why do you think I told the first disciples to pray, ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done?’ In that sense, heaven isn’t a destination as much as it is a presence—my presence with you. Don’t focus on gaining entrance into the kingdom when you die; focus on me gaining entrance into you—then you can truly live. Once I have gained entrance into you, then you can do the same works that I did and pass on the good news of the kingdom to others.
Where do you go when you die? You will either be with me, or you will be apart from me. Don’t focus on the destination; focus on me! The good news is: you don’t have to wait to die to be with me. Through the Holy Spirit I have promised to be with all who confess me as Lord. Am I your Lord?
See, when you understand the details of who and experience the present presence of who, you never have to worry about the question of where.
You have many other questions: What about those who died who never had a chance to respond to me? What happens to those who died before you came? What about extremely moral people like Gandhi—will they be in hell, too?
You don’t have to worry about those questions. My judgments will be just. I will have mercy upon whom I will have mercy. You can trust me. The question for you is: who do you say I am?

Awesome. So I can be a shitty person my whole life and as long as I say Jesus is son of God before I take the big dirt nap I'm good to go.

The thief on the cross led a life of lies and deception. Yet once he knew Christ as Savior he was washed of those previous sins and from that point forward was changed (born again).

Only a foolish man would think that simply "saying" they believed would be sufficient to decieve the almighty God. But if you truly "believe" in Jesus as God and accept him into your heart, then your life from that point forward will be forever changed.

If you believe it in your heart and repent then yes. This seems to be an incredible hard concept to understand for those that are not Christians.

This post was not intended to provide a forum for you to debate the validity of scripture. Many theologeans have spent their lives investigating this topic (more definitively than you or I could) and the historical accuracy including the longest intact record of family lineage, has been established. Still, it is a complex record spanning many civilations and cultures and so the interpretation of any single event is still debated.

This post is simply to discuss the Christian belief of where we go once we leave our bodies. If you don't believe scripture then I don't know how you can contribute to this discussion.

I'm a Christian, my belief of when those who are saved go to heaven is different. None of us will ever know, who's idea is right until we arrive. Then it wont even matter. I choose to believe in God.
