My neighbor did. I think his tab was around $60K. I can get the name.

What do you mean by "dug out". Putting a basement under a house would be expensive, but making a current crawl space deeper would be cheaper. What do you want done?

My house was on a 4' deep crawl space. Had it lifted and put 4' wood framed walls on top. Set the house down on top and die all the necessary weeping tiles in and out, ground runs and poured a floor. Now have a highrise bungalow. Did most of the work myself, with the exception of the house lifting ($3000) and I'm close to $20,000 into it. I did more than double my living space because I added a 5 x 14 split level side entrance. Well worth it if you don't plan on moving. Housing market in this area is continuing to rise... Paid 75000 for it 11 years ago, real estate agent says I could get over $200,000 now...

My grandfather dug the basement under the house in the late 40's (he also was in his late 40's) with a shovel and a wheel barrow. 8' deep, and put in cement block walls. All in one summer, after working all day for Chrysler.

Compared to the men of that era, we are all pussies.

I just want to clear out the existing crawl. Builder only did like a 10'x10' area. It's only about 3' tall in that area. The rest is about 1' from the joists. Makes it pretty difficult to get anything done under there.

my grandfather climbed into his crawl space and leveled the dirt to perfection, at the age of 80, because he's cool like that. he had about 12-24" to deal with and now it is all a perfect 24" level......not worth the effort imo

I started digging under my old house about 12 years ago and got enough done to make it easier to repair some plumbing. Too many other things I'd rather do than crawl under there and haul dirt out 1 bucket at a time. Go find some skinny mexicans that will work cheap.

Saw a neighbor do it when I was a kid. He had a small electric conveyer belt that he ran out through a hole in the blocks that he had made. He would shovel onto the conveyer and it would carry the dirt out and drop it in a pile outside.
