If tires are no good after 5 years, how long are recaps good for?

Tires are still good after 5 years, just the outer carcass wears out. Tread diminishes, sidewalls dry rot. Punctures in the tread surface happen.

Recapping a tireis basically is like taping a hockey stick, they take sheet rubber and wind it round and round and round a good, or repaired carcass, and then heat mold them under pressure, to force new tread into the fresh rubber, reinforce the sidewalls, and imprint the new tire info.

Retreads are illegal on semi trucks as steer tires. Peace.

Interesting. So you could have a fresh rubber skin on a dry rotted carcass.

Yes you can. The old rubber carcass is completely ground away to the inner structure. The only way that it wouldn't work, is if the dry rot has sat with cracks exposed long enough to break through the inner structure of the tire. Once the inner structure is broken down, its shredder material.

Learn something new every day. Seeing truck treads all over the highway gave me the impression that the tread was the only new part of a recap.

they're illegal on any truck as steer tires.. not to mention a bad idea in any light. so anyway.. Someone know of a company ??

i could ask my boss if our shop can use some extra junk tires to have recapped. we go through tires pretty fast and most of the ones we get are retreads.

many of those "gators" are not recaps. todays recap tires are pretty darn good, and really high tech compared to the old days.
i have put 500k on a set of re caps b4. in over 1 million miles i have never had a recap blow out.
i have had a brand new goodyear steer blow in less than a month.
i was lucky to live through the steer blowout!
i would run recaps on any vehicle if the price was right.

you must get the good ones then. i had 4 recaps come apart just last month alone, and i have 1 tire currently that is chunking to pieces. my truck only gets driven to new buffalo, mi every night and probably 100 miles around town every day.

i think around town driving can sometimes be harder on tires then just trucking down the highway.

the front drive axle tires should last at least 300k!
the steers and rear drives wont last as long.
