You are going to New Orleans and plan on drinking beer? Lame, so many local drinks, hurricanes, gator bombs etc to drink instead.
Don't be a fag and just drink beer.

This place is really cool. Went there almost every night on way home

http://www.lafittesblacksmithshop.com/Homepage.html

And this place has an amazing stout:

Irish Channel Stout, from NOLA brewing (seasonal)

http://www.yelp.com/biz/boondock-saint-new-orleans

It's a cool Irish bar, with great hurricane's if you don't want beer.

Go to Pat O Brians, just to say you went, and then go get a good hurricane across the street at Boondock Saints

I'm going in about two weeks.

X2 - especailly LaFitte's and Cafe DuMonde.

Go to Tropical Isle's Bayou Club (on Bourbon) and hear actual cajun/zydeco music - the best party music ever.

Go walk the French Market area - have a muffaletta from Central Grocery. Interesting sights, like Jackson Square. Also walk the French Quarter other than Bourbon - it's a cool area with a lot of strange stuff going on. Watch a line of crabs walking down the street one day - they escaped from a delivery to a seafood restaurant.

Take the "haunted tour" - it was very entertaining (and stopped for a beer at Lafitte's).

Drink a Hand Grenade (Tropical Isle invented them), or Hurricane (as discussed).

What everyone else has said.

If you want a heart attack on a bun, head over towards the warehouse district/ convention center and get a Stuffed, Deep Fried 1/2 pound (or maybe pound) Burger From Tuckers. Don't remember the street, it is just right up the street from the convention center where the Residence Inn and courtyard are.

Also in that same area are the Red Eye, and Angry Dog, both have local bands etc, and are good local bars.

Besides Lafittes (one of my favorites), another fun place is the Dungeon. Doesn't open up till midnight or so, but Oh the stuff I have seen in that place lol. It is hard to explain, but worth it.
