Default Project "Darkside" '97 XJ

Picked this up last week from 94Rangeron35s. '97 XJ, 4.5 Rusty's lift, d30/d35, 4.10's, welded rear, open front, 32" BFG MT's.

First planned updates are adding a winch and an Aussie locker in the front

Took it to Rocks and Valleys on Sunday for its maiden voyage. Worked great only real carnage was bending up the passenger side slider coming down hard on a rock. Need to add some support from the slider to the uni-body to make it stronger. But it went pretty much everywhere I pointed it.

Couple of poser shots

Bent slider......had to bend it back down some to get the door back on the passenger side

Well finally got around to tearing the rear axle apart after breaking the axle shaft last summer. Was hoping for an easy fix since I already had spare shafts. Of course nothing ever goes easy. The C-clip that is on the side that broke got welded to the spider gear when the rear was welded up. While trying to figure out how to get the C-clip loose I realized that the weld on that side has a hair line crack in two places. So looks like now I either need to find another carrier for the D35 or move forward with swapping in an 8.8. Either way looks like the jeep is going to be sitting for awhile yet until I can scrape together some funds to fix it.

Also realized today that the xj has theft deterent lug nuts on it which I don't have the socket for. Anyone have any advice on getting these off?

Put a regular socket on it. I do that with most of those. Just slide it on. Those are for decoration, not theft deterrent.

That looks like a standard discount tire lug nut. Usually they are just used on aluminum wheels with small lug holes. That said, visit any discount tire and i bet there key slips right on.
