Default 'Wet house' being considered in Michigan for homeless drinkers

This sounds like a horrible idea, that will end in a lot of fights. I guess at least it will be Privately funded, for now.

Judging from the "how many beers can we drink" thread a lot of you will end up there.

There are places like this set up in Vancouver, BC. They have medical staff, and have houses set up for heroin users, drinkers, huffers, rock smokers, etc.

At the heroin house they supply clean water, fresh needles, sterilized melting containers, and the nurses will help find the correct places to inject, so people don't kill themselves. They even have the drugs there to reverse drug overdoses, so that if somebody crashes, they can get the Narcan into them before they code. The gubment says it's way safer for the people on the street, the users, and everyone in general. Once you have your drugs onboard, they have rooms where medical staff watch over you to make sure you don't die, drug counselors are on staff, and security so nobody gets robbed of their next hit, or the twenty spot they got from the pawn shop for their mothers TV.

I guess if this is cheaper than dealing with them on the streets and hospitals it's OK.

I'm not a big fan of people dying in the streets but I'm not overly concerned about drunks and drug addicts dying. I'm not sure what society gains by preventing such deaths.

He said the difficulty lies with the lack of employment infrastructure in Detroit compared to cities like Minneapolis and Seattle. Without enough employment or businesses able to hire people in recovery, he said, those dealing with addiction have little distraction from what triggers their drinking. Their efforts to live independently can fall by the wayside.

work was my no.1 reason to drink....
