Default Lift Kit Questions

02 TJ Sport 4.0L

Plan on getting a lift within a few months, I would like a good amount of tire clearance but not something that is unsafe and wont require T-Case work and such. The tires I will be riding on will be 31" bfg a/t and I am looking to get a anywhere from a 3-3.5" lift.

Mind you this jeep is my D&D and sees much more road then offroad but the lift will be nice when I take it on trips 2-3 times a year.

So my questions are as follows:
1.With a 3-3.5" lift will I need to regear anything or mess with my trans/T-case?
2. Besides coil springs and shocks, what other add ons should I get that will be benifical?
3. Is a rear adj track bar necessary or should I just go with a front adj track bar instead?
4. Will new control arms be necessary?

Thank you

Lift height is all dependant on tire size. In your case, with 31s, you will not need near the lift you are stating. 31s could fit a stock TJ, although a bit tight, but your springs are likely sagged too.

Unless you really like to spend money, I'd just add some 2 inch spacers onto what you already have and buy a good set of name brand quality shocks ($300 to $500). You'd have a nice riding TJ that would not require any further mods.

A slightly better approach, especially if you a winch, would be new springs in the 2 inch lift range. OME would be a great option. Again, buy a good set of shocks to go with it and be happy.

With all that said, if the lift is kept to 2 inches or less no other mods will need to happen. Also, there is just no need to go higher if you only plan to run 31s. Jeeps ride and drive much better at lower lift heights.

for 31's buy a 1" body lift and be done. cheap and effective.
they fit with no lift barely.

I had 2" spacers and 32s, with the sway bars off they rubbed a pinch other than that i was very happy with that setup.

Like others say, if you only want to clear 31's you don't need 3" or more of lift.

If you need shocks, it would be a good time to do it. You could do spacers or 2" coils. I'd recommend sway bar disconnects and front brake lines.

Track bars are not necessary at 2" of lift, nor are control arms or transmission/transfer case mods.

Your lift has nothing to do with gearing. Tire sizes dictate gearing.

3-3 1/2" of lift will fit 33s, all you need is 2". Spacers retain the stock jeep ride you just have more body roll. the OME kit rides very nice and gives about 2 1/2" of lift, when I had it on I found it better than stock. Another choice is with minor modification, you can fit a stock JK lift on and it gives arouns 3" of lift (4" with a stock JKL suspension).

Sway bar disconnects are only needed if you wheel the jeep and disconnect the swaybar while offroad.

At 2" of lift, adjustable CAs, driveline modifications are not necessary. Depending on the gears in your jeep, 3.73 will be ok with 31s. 3.07 and the auto will make the auto a dog.

Im thinking about going with the BDS 2" Kit, just a small lift to give the tires more clearance.

Thanks for all the input and help guys!

bds is good stuff!
2" is plenty.
add a 1" body lift later and fit 33's when you get the itch to grow.

I've got 2" BDS springs on my 97 TJ and run 33's just fine.

I'm running brand new 2" BDS springs on the rear and 3" BDS springs on the front because of winch and winch bumper of my 2000 TJ. I'm running 33x12.50 BFG KM2 on 10" wide DCII wheels. With front swaybar discoed the tires get into the fender pretty bad. Everything in the rear is still hooked up and the tires still rub a bit. I already have the bump stops in and with the addition of a 1" daystar body lift I'm hopeing it will no longer rub. Just sharing my experience for what it's worth.

How does a 2" BDS suspension lift sound with BDS Shocks, Coils, cam bolts for the control arms, and quick disconnects.
Including a rough country 1.25" body lift with the motor mount hardware sound?

Should this be everything Ill need in order for it to run safely?

Another question I thought I should ask, Since I will have a heavy bumper and winch on the front of the vehicle should I add some kind of spacer to the front springs so it sits as high as it should with the lift?

I say play it by ear but its likely

If I ever get another TJ it will get a 2" susp lift and a 1.5" body lift. tummy tuck, 33's, bumpers, winch, sport cage, 4.10s, frt/rear LSDs, chromos and some basic armor.

I like the direction your going ... makes me wish I went a different direction with my build years ago.

Yes. You will need something. My winch & winch bumper sagged the front end of my Jeep 3/4" - 1". Like I said earlier I am running 3" BDS springs in front and 2" springs in the rear. The Jeep sits level with this setup.

Depends on the springs. Many of the better brands build their springs knowing that a winch and bumper will be added. OME sells different springs (same height) for heavy accessories or for all stock. The big issue is if the spring sags so far under weight that it's noticable, it will likely continue to sag and will need to be replaced in the future. I've mentioned a couple times already, but buy good springs at the start at be done with it.
