Default TC Waterman SUP Race 8/18, was Detroit SUP Fest

Next event: TC Waterman 8/18 - Traverse City http://tcwaterman.com/

*************

Detroit Surf is hosting the Detroit SUP Fest this weekend at Kensington Metro Park.

3 Mile Rec race starts at 9am and a 6 Mile Elite race is at 10am.

http://www.detroitsupfestival.com/

If you are interested in seeing what Stand Up Paddle boarding is about come check it out - there will be local paddle (and other) vendors there, some boards that can be rented after the races, and there will be other activities.

This is a World Paddle Association sanctioned events and there will be Pros here...there are even a couple locals that have been racing and kicking butt at other WPA races.

Inviscid's watersports division will be racing this race.

Just last weekend was a WPA race in Holland. And, there will be the TC Waterman race in Traverse City Aug 18 (I can't make it to that, boo).

There are some companies on the west side that sell/rent boards. The Outpost of Holland is one of them. Other than that I dont know of others off the top of my head. But Paddle the Mitten travels over that way often for lessons, board sales, etc.
http://paddlethemitten.com/

As far as events, the TC one is the only other one this year in Michigan that I am aware of.

I'm sure you could find groups to paddle with, or even follow the Detroit Surf groups on facebook etc, sometimes groups of us will travel Michigan to paddle...

Oh sweet. Feel free to PM me, depending on what she mostly wants to do with it (yoga, just putz around, etc) different boards will serve different purposes.

If there is ANY way you can make it to SUP Fest this weekend I highly recommend it. Then you can talk to some of the experts in the sport to see what board will be best for her, get out on a few, etc. Detroit Surf's boards are made 100% here in SE Michigan - they are sweet if you want to go the super local route.

Well, it's going to be a fun race. Just heard the course will be 1.5 miles and 2-4 laps depending on which class is racing. So there will be activity for spectators to see.

The one in Grand Haven is probably Wet Mitten Surf Shop. They have a TC shop too and are selling some of the older rental boards, but haven't said anything about a GH sale yet.

Wakebabe is back in her element!
Results are in, my official time was 57:03 putting me at 2nd in my board class for the womens rec. By time I beat about 6 guys - which was awesome. Slower than I was aiming for but I was basing my goal off a trial run that was a straight course and in calm conditions this course had 11 turns and had a pretty steady breeze making it choppy with the longest stretches being into the wind or cross wind. I also learned I have a great board but maybe not the fastest...so the search for a real race board starts...But what a blast. http://www.detroitsupfestival.com/

Here I am with my board and Linda from Paddle the Mitten who sold me my board and provided lots of race support!

I'm not sure which point this was on the course:

Trying to get low for a quick turn:

Next race...TC Waterman Aug 18. I'll be here and hopefully racing on a Comet - which will be a faster board (seen below):

Good golly those are awful big or you're awful small. LOL Congrats. The wife & I were watching a couple paddling along our shore the other day. Looked kinda serene.

What's an entry level board for a fat ass (me of course) cost?

While I was in New Jersey I took a class on Stand Up Paddleboarding for something to kill time on this summers vacation.. Its quite fun but it seems I have no balance whatsover once Im standing up because I fell in at least 20 times in an hour.. then I got home and thought.. hmm.. maybe I should look for one to buy so I can take to the lake.. $1000!

Thanks! My board is 10' 6" I am about 5' 8". You may want more of a touring board, they tend to be wider and more stable. Your best bet would be to try a few out. Fortunately there are several vendors in Metro Detroit that have lots of boards you could try out. Entry level boards may run you anywhere from $700-$1300 depending on where you buy, brand, size. I personally would avoid inflatable boards - they tend to be similar price to 'solid' boards, some less expensive, but not that stable/easy to paddle.

Maybe you need a board that is a better size for you? The only times I have ever fallen off are when I was attempting hand stands or practicing walking on the board for turns.

I would guess soon you'll see a few used boards on the market...it seems to just this year start to really grow in Michigan.

Dont worry about it. Home now, I can see the pics.

WB, I see some people using double ended paddles like a kayak-er, that to me seems much easier and helps with balance. Why do most only use the single ended paddle?

You use it like a canoe paddle. Take three or so strokes a side, little bit of a j-stroke, then switch. You want to be able to hold the top of the paddle. Balance isn't an issue as far as that goes - and the bigger ones are super easy to balance on. I tried SUP for the first time on a 7'6"er the other weekend and was able to keep my balance and paddle around. Not pretty but not bad for the first time on a short board.

Some people do kneel to paddle, in that case a kayak paddle would probably make sense. You want to be able to stand up comfortably though to have the most fun and have the best views into the water.

well i used about a 3 foot wide one.. and i fell off.. and they made us trade boards in the water (I fell in, wife didnt get wet) and the smaller board was way worse. The lady that taught us was doin headstands and crap on her board.. showoffs ;) ...... guess i need a 4-5 foot wide.. boat! She was showin us how to step back on it and lift the nose up to turn sharper.. and of course i fell off..I fell off trying to do anything...

Where do you go near detroit that rents them and would be okay to swim? Wife has been wanting to find a place to rent them in one of the great lakes.
