Default 02 sport trac starter

Currently working on R&Ring the starter in a 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, Manual 5 spd., 4.0L, 4x4

Seems to be not enough room to remove the starter through the bottom or the top. Just curious if removing the front driveshaft would give you enough room to pull it out. Im seriously hoping the whole front axle assy. doesn't get dropped.

Anyone done this or replaced on a similar vehicle? If so id appreciate some advice, thanks.

Been awhile since i've done one, but they will come out. I can't remeber if I pulled the drive shaft or not, but it definatly came out the bottom.

Cant seem to wiggle it out, I read somewhere that the ford service manual says to remove the front shock. I don't see how this helps at all. Doesn't see, to be enough room between the frame and pinion flange.

If worst comes to worst, you could always lower the center axle section.

I woul leave everything "hooked up" and just remove the three large bolts that hold it in place, should net you a few inches of clearance.

anyluck??? should be able to just drop the front shaft and should make its way out. Ford wouldnt make you drop a axle to change a starter.
