Default 1982 CJ7 Limited Build

Hey all, just joined on here recently searching for advice and more local parts. figured i might as well post what I've torn down so far. dont have the very begining pics but good enough.

I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, but I will certainly need help along the way, as well as knowledge on replacement parts and identifying some of the current parts.

This was bought by a friend who had swapped out the original 258 (4.2) engine and 5? speed t5 trans for a rebuilt AMC 360 bored .030 over and either a Turbo Trans 350, or 400; I haven't been able to positively identify it yet. I matched up the #'s on the trans tag via google to a 350 turbo trans on corvettes in the 80's, so I'm thinking it's a 350.

It was running when I bought it, but those tubs weren't galvanized, and being so, I had a better view of the road through the floor than the windshield.

Order of business:
1. Get tank out and cut all fuel lines (rusted out)
2. Remove brake lines
3. Remove all wiring as possible from engine
4. Get engine/trans removed
5. Blast frame and paint it
6. Get rear shackle mount brace welded on, then paint that.
7. Everything else

Need help on identifying various parts I have. Orionn has been a big help so far in general parts needed counseling and identification. Looking for a second opinion on whether or not I have a dana 300 t case.

I would have assumed so since it's stock, but he said the adapter kit is really expensive so I'm not sure now.

Anyway, forget all this

Here it is

Just after it began. (top, hood, and fenders off)

dash and windshield frame were completely toast as you can see. rusted out real badly.

Looks like an AMC case TH400 trans adapted to a Dana 300 with a nice short adapter, AMC 20 rear, Dana 30 front, standard front shackle location with somewhat bootiefabbed shackles.

ok cool that's what I was hoping. Isn't there some kind of special adapter kit it would need from the turbo 350 or 400 trans to the t case?

k so that's +2 on a d300, and you think I have that special adapter to the trans?

lol yea those shackles look a bit funny to me too....... but something in my
head is telling me there is some kind of shackle reverse mod to like take away front end suspension sag???

any other pics I could show you to make you any more positive on whether it's the 350 or 400 trans? the 400 is a bit beefier right? but they can both handle a lot of power. more than i'll be putting out.

k so that's what everyone's thinking so far, cool. again, any distinguishing factors that could prove the trans one way or the other?
i thought i was told the oil pan was texas shaped on the 400, but I can't really tell cause of the skid plate.

yea joe they both work great lol. i like the trans set up with my b&m t-handle sport shifter or whatever kind it is lol. kinda makes the auto into a stick.

If it is an AMC engine (looks like a 304) then I would say that it has to be a TH400 as there is no adapter to the bellhousing. There were many TH400's built with the AMC bolt pattern in the 70's and many folks (such as myself) swapped these in. You can see between the transmission and the t-case an adapter. The transmission was likley rebuilt and a new tailhousing put in for the D300.

The transfer case is a D300, can tell that by the shape and outputs on it.

alright.... but does it mess up your theory if I know for a fact that it's a 360? posted that in the first few paragraphs of

that would mean there should be an adapter...... but there isn't?? or that it's a tt350.......which would still need an adapter???........

It's a TH400 trans without a doubt, six bolts in a hex pattern from the trans to the t-case adapter, TH350 has four in a square pattern. TH400's were used in QuadraTrac Jeeps with a special case to bolt to the AMC V8 (304/360/401...all the same).

258, 304, 360, 401 are all the same bolt pattern.

ok yea just found out that the 400 was a natural bolt to the 360. Not stock though for my year, but I already knew my buddy swapped it in.

cool thanks

I know they're both about equal....... but is the 400 or the 350 better? I've read that the 350 is more power efficient and the 400 takes more to get going?? Also heard that about 500 hp, the 400 wins, but not sure.
