Question Help... What part is this?? 98 Ranger 3.0L 4x4 5spd

I bought a 98 ranger 3.0 that has a rebuilt motor and new trans supposedly... finding out the hard way that the guy that had it was a moron, and lied his ass off about half the things he said he did.

He hid this from me when i was looking at the truck and now that I'm starting to tear into it i"m finding a lot of shit i don't like. I don't mind the work i like it just not being lied to about a vehicle that i will need to depend on or use as a dd.

Anyways the pic attached shows a small box/ part attached to the intake manifold, just bolted to it right next to the throttle body. Its cracked and the hose connection is silicone putty sealed as to not leak...Any Ideas what this is so I can replace it?

Really appreciate the help guys.

EGR pressure sensor, called the DFPE sensor. They go bad very commonly on these Rangers, especially the original part. Make sure your replacement has a plastic housing- this is the newer style that is considerably more reliable. A new replacement is like 50 bucks.

THANKS! What issues will the DFPE sensor cause going bad? Or how noticeable are its symptoms when going bad?

It just monitors EGR emissions control operation, so as far as I can tell it going bad just means the EGR system doesn't know what its doing and stops working; I have mine blocked off entirely as my EGR system fell apart, and all I've noticed is a check engine light for the sensor (and I removed the check engine light bulb, so that settled that matter )

Ic. I Googled it and it says that when it starts failing or does fail it can cause a hard stumble or what feels like a severe misfire. That's what my truck is doing when its cold. I start getting up near 2800-3000 rpms more so in 3rd and 4th gear and it feels like the truck bucks or stumbles and then keeps going. As it warms up driving it happens less and less. Doesn't die out or anything scared the shit outta me when it happened. Too bad you can find anything online until you know the name of the part. Nothing the last 2 days searching, now type in part name and failing and the first thing is my diagnosis to a "T". Ill try replacing this and seeing what happens.
Thanks buzzbrick for all the info. Autozone has the plastic one for $65!
