Default Jobs in Northern Michigan?

As my time in the Army comes to an end here in the next few months the wife and I have been discussing relocating to Northern Michigan along Huron, Michigan or Superior. We've really had enough of the barren deserts, extreme heat and lack of water everywhere we've been forced to live for the past 4.5 years.

How's the job market on the coasts of Michigan? Looking for something in the 35-40k range. Preferably in the upper half of the state and U.P. but as long as it's near big water any tips or hints would be greatly appreciated. I definitely don't want to move us up there and then suddenly regret it lol

I've heard a lot recently about how much Michigan is doing for Veterans now and am hoping that extends past the southeast corner of the state.

If you're looking to beat the heat, MI is not the place to be right now.

Before I joined I was an LG Elite appliance tech, then I became an M1A2 Abrams tanker and also learned how to use pretty much any piece of heavy equipment. Then I was moved up to Battalion level to serve on the Lt. Col's tank crew and fell into the world of Operations which taught me how to handle the business side of over 800 people, etc.

I'm a very well rounded individual lol

Just like I've been tellin' ya, most of the better paying jobs are near people. I'd love to go live out in BFE where my nearest neighbor is a mile away but that whole having to work thing is a bitch.

Sounds like logging or excavating/road crew would be something you could get a foot in. I am not too sure how big and busy those industries are anymore. Just food for thought.

Do you need medical benefits for your family or not? IE: is what the military provides good enough or do you need more?

If not, assuming you have some cash on hand, I'd consider getting into the dirt moving business. A lot of people, especially in the central and northeast part of the state, lost their businesses due to being overleveraged and/or tightening on SBA loans for seasonal work. Sometimes you can still find people selling their whole operation for not a lot of money. It's not a bad gig if you don't have to raise a family on it.

I tried the UP thing. I found that it's a nice place to visit, not such a great place to live. Haven't been back since I sold my house in September 2008.

Not to be a buzz kill, but take a look at eunemployment rates in northern MI.

At best, it's as bad as Detroit - at worst, much worse. If you don't work for the local/county/state federal government or school district it's much worse.

Before the economy tanked, UE rate in Oscode county was over 10%.

I was investigating building satellite call centers in smaller towns a year or so ago, and ran down the stats.

I almost tried it, had a job offer in Marquette and turned it down in favor of montana. you know why yoopers have so much trash in their yards? so they have something to look at besides their fat women.
