Default Collision Rebuild Process

I bought 3 G8's from an online auction and will show the process of the teardown and rebuild of one.

This is a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT with about 25,000 miles.

It hit something low and damaged the engine cradle, drivers side suspension, front bumper cover, hood and fender. There is also damage down the side and the roof is dented.

Dropped the engine cradle out and pulled the oil pan and cleaned it to be welded.
That is a 6.0 aluminum engine and 6-speed auto trans.
Horsepower: 361 hp @ 5300 rpm
Torque: 385 ft-lbs. @ 4400 rpm

Once I get the oil pan, cradle and suspension back in it will go up to my shop and go on the the frame rack and make sure the rails are squared up. They could be swayed a little bit but I would not be surprised if they are pretty close if not on.

Used to be, a car that looked like that would just be superficial damage and a weekend repair.

Now, that is a major undertaking. No wonder insurance rates are so high.

Good luck with the restore, will these have 'clean' titles or salvage?

Not really a big job, I bet I have no more than 3 hours into the teardown.

The new cradle comes with the suspension and steering rack still installed, so just bolt it in place.

All three I bought have salvage titles but man I am surprised at the lack of damage. The black one has the most damage and parts are not cheap but I found a place that specializes in hot rod cars and have most of what I need for it and the GXP.

You drive the car not the title and if the repairs are done correctly you will never know there was damage prior and you get them thousands cheaper.

For example 2009 G8 GT with 25,000 miles go for about $24,000

I can sell mine for around $18,000, maybe cheaper depending on what it takes to fix them.

This is the one I have been driving and I love it. Can't wait to get the GXP on the road, just installed a Magnaflow exhaust on it this morning.

Can someone look up service records for the GXP? Just curious what if anything was done under warranty.

You don't get paid to do tear downs at work, so you're going to spend your weekends at home tearing them down instead. You body guys sure know how to have a good time

I would imagine a call to any GM dealer service dept would work. I found a recall repair done on a former car of mine on it's car fax. I called the dealer, gave them the vin and simply asked for the repair's done and didn't want any previous owner info.

2 years ago, yes.

Now, no, as much as I love the G8 i am starting to really appreciate the hatchback for loading a bunch of useless shit into the back of the car.

If I had the extra $$ Yes, I would love a G8 GT or GXP as a psuedo hot rod.
