Any one build a mini cabin?

Wife and I just paid off our property in northern MI and we are looking to build a small cabin 12x16. Inexpensive, quickly built, easy on the taxes and easy to heat should we need to use it in the winter. Not sure if we want to buy a kit or build to our own plans. What did you do, kit or build to your own plans? What was your experience like. Any useful info you want to share?

Use D logs for exterior, stud frame with 2 x 4's fiber glass batting, and finish the inside with Knotty pine.

Their is a guy outside of Jonesville Michigan that sells them on the side of the main road just East of town, the last I was through there perty decent.

Was thinking shed kit but they are pricy and do not have the roof line I want. I was thinking of one wall about 11ft high with windows along the top and the opposing wall 8 ft high and a metal roof cant finfd that in a shed kit. Cabin kits with those features are quite high. would like to get away with $3500.00. Found some cabin similar in a statepark.

What ever you build make sure it complies with the zoning if there is any, that could also drive up the price as well, I know in my township you can not have a garage before a house and the house / cabin must be so big.

small cabin

check out www.thinchomes.com my brother ownes this and we have built a couple of these. The 12x16 had a small kitchen, single bed loft, and a bathroom like what would be in a boat with a toilet/shower. It is completely built and trucked to your site and set on your foundation, with the 6" and 8" walls and floor we heated it with a small electric heater in the winter. We have a 12 x 14 in the process of being completed it does not have a bath room but we can still add it if needed. If you have any questions call me 248-866-0147 Thanks, Michael

Just helped a lady build a cabin in MT. Using second hand furnishings and rough cut wood it cost her 7500 dollars roughly to build. 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom and a big kitchen/living room.

I built something similar,.........12 x 8.
I assembled all 4 stud/osb sheeted walls on my barn floor and built the trusses there as well.
Poured the slab on site, then just hauled the walls and trussed up on a trailer. It took me about three hours to assemble including sheeting the roof. Was able to vinyl side and shingle roof in less then 8 hours the following day. I had it completely inclosed in 48 hours.

Check out Northstar Storage Barns in Mio, MI. They are north of town just before Kittle Road in the heart of Mio Amish Country.

They make several models that make nice cabins and the quality is top notch. Across the street from them is Panel Concepts, they also make small cabins but I know they can get expensive.

If you are looking for something fast and easy but still looks good, this is what you want... Located in Mio. My uncle put one on his property before/while his house was being built. Even after the house was built, he kept it because it was awesome.

Checked them out, found two cabins very similar to those tucked back in the middle of no where just this last weekend at the property.
