Default No turn over on '99 Ford Ranger

So to story goes...I picked up a 1999 Ford Ranger, 3.0L v-6 flexfuel, decided to look at motor prices before I even got it, but anyway, It will not turn over, basically you turn to key on to start it and all you hear is a "click". The starter is brand new the PO bought a new one thinking the old starter was bad. All the lights and everything come one, no CEL.

The problem started after the truck sat for 6+months, it started up, PO seen the brake line was bad, replaced it; and then took it for a test ride. He said that the motor seemed to slow down, then it finally just quit. Didn't say that there was any noise or smoke like it bent a rod.

I puddled around with it today (4-24), but I really didn't accomplish much, I'm really not sure where to start. There wasn't any metal in oil or oil filter (haven't actually taken the pan off though). So what (if any) are the things to start looking for, starter not engaging right, such as it needs shims or what????

Put a socket on the Harmonic balancer/crank bolt and see if you can turn it over by hand..

Can you turn the engine manually? put a socket and breaker bar on the front of the crank and see if you can spin it. Make sure it is in neutral. I had an engine lock up with about the same symptoms. Slowed down then nothing. About a week later I tried to crank it again, it rotated maybe twice, then never again.

X3 on seeing if the crank will spin, those where common to have the cam syncrohnizers go bad and the engine lets go in no time.

The harm balancer had 3 or 4 bolts on it, tired to turn it, left only loosened the bolt and right, just got the bolt tight and nothing else would move,

....i just finnised reading an article on the cam syncro shaft, seems to be a pretty common thing with rangers, and seeing as how it happens all the time and considering the PO, i'd bet the motors toast. I'm gonna go pull the shaft and see if it's junk, if so; i have my answer as to weather the motor is good or bad

You would be right, pulled the syncro and it's all f***ed up lol

Think i'm shit outta luck, the only used motor I found that will actually drop right is range from $1,300-$1,400

Anyone know a good place to rebuild a motor? I've never actually had to have one taken in and rebuilt

I'd say find a regular 3.0 non flex fuel and avoid using the ethanol.

not that simple, apparently the exhaust, pcm and fuel pumps are different.

everyone that i've talked to says that you cannot and i mean CAN NOT, switch the two....but it seems like i'd be able to put a 3.0 gas in and swap out the computer too???
