6.5s are the old diesels in GM trucks. If i remember there were two different diesel's used in them, a 6.5L Turbo, and a 6.2L non turbo

...I suppose that didn't help any

Anyway, they were always a pretty reliable running engine. cj65 is right in that they didn't make a whole lot of power, but they DD pretty good. If your going with a diesel dd though, i'd try to find a 6.2L, they got better MPGs than the 6.5 turbos. i do know that the cylinder heads were prone to cracking on both v8s.

They get a lot of bad rap because they basically took an olds gas engine, threw some heads and an injector on it and called it a diesel. (olds also made a 350 diesel though)

True.

In 2000 they sold the design to AM General (G.E.P.= General Engine Products) and they made several changes to the casting design to stop the cracks and stiffen it up.

I DD my 6.5 in my 1993 with 292K and counting. Pulls good, 18 MPG, and away you go. The trans, 4L80E, was rebuilt just before I got it though.

True, but where do you think Detroit diesel got the design for the 6.5 and 6.2

Wrong.

The gentelman at GM casting devolopment that assisted with the 6.2 & 6.5 design just happens to be my uncle. We've discussed the 6.5 in depth as he was curious about the improved G.E.P. engine in my H1. I can assure you that an Oldsmobile engine had nothing ever to do with a Detroit Deisel as the DD was a 'fresh' design because the Oldsmobile design was a miserable failure.

Does he feel it's a decent engine?

Ya, it was never designed to be a powerhouse or hot rodded. Just a moderate HP deisel with decent fuel economy.

Put a fluid damper and a remote PMD heat sink on it if you get it. I also wouldn't throw over 10 PSI at a stock Detroit 6.5.
