Default abandoned title?

The other day I stopped to help a couple out who were broken down on the side of the road. Their engine was toast, he had said the top end was bad and had been making terrible noises before they left INDIANA with it. Long story short he said he did not have the money to fix it and that I could have the car if i could give his fiance and himself a ride to Cheboygan. He did not have the title on him but he had the registration which matched the car and was in his name.

My issue here is that they are going to be in Cheboygan the next two or three months helping care for his Grandma till she passes and I really want to get the car titled before that so does anyone know if i can apply for an abandoned title for the car here in Michigan even though it currently has an Indiana title and registration?

The vehicle needs to sit for 1 year unregistered to be able to use the tr-54 form. You will have to wait until the current registration expires then 1 year on top of the that. The easiest thing to do is have him apply for a lost title from Indiana, have it mailed to him, have him sign it, then mail it to you. I have no idea if you can apply for a lost title through the mail though lol.. He may have to do it in person.

I offered to put an engine in it for free if he was able to come up with $250(which was what i could get the engine for from genes with my buddies employee discount) and he said no thanks that once he is in Cheboygan his grandma's car becomes his. I also did pay him for the car even though he did not want any money for it.

There is a form you can get from SOS, you fill out and take a blue book value sheet into sos, and they run to make sure its not stolen, and you get a title after an hourish. At lest that is what I have read, I will know sometime this week as I am going through title issues right now.

Yep, he will need an appraisal now, and likely a surety bond.

Looking on the website i am wondering if i can try and title this as a put together car and show the bill of sale i have and say it was for the body - drivetrain?

Going through a very similar problem myself right now. Unfortunately I lost the title before I was able to get it transfered. Dude lives in TN, and the vehicle was titled in GA. He said he tried to get a replacement for me, but couldn't do so without going through "too much trouble". He DID send me bill of sale, but the "nice" ladies at SOS tell me I CAN'T get a title.....mainly because of it being out of state. I'm getting an ulcer trying to get this done. I'll try and keep this updated as I go.

This used to be SOOOOOOO easy! WTF?!
