Default dana 35 axle noise question

I have a dana 35 with a detroit locker and 4.88's. I installed this setup about a month ago on my first try I got the crush sleeve to tight going by specs. off mitchell so got a new crush sleeve started over. I have all new bearing and races seem to have good rolling torque but I am getting humming noise that starts at low speed and gets louder as speed increases but if you stop accelerating the noise goes away until you almost come to a stop then you can hear it just alittle. Any help would be great also if there is anybody in my area that would be will to give me a hand would be great, thanks

Mine made a similar noise when it did not have enough preload on the carrier (bearings failed). How was your preload?

Also, how confident are you that you didn't over tighten the crush collar again?

Do your self a favor and get rid of the crush sleeve, they have a hard time keeping the pinion tight. You can get a solid pinion spacer kit from anyone that sells diff. Parts,it's a bit of a pita to install, but well worth it.
I never have good luck setting pinion bearing to a spec.I have to do it with no diff in the way. I install the (crush sleeve)solid spacer with all the shims on it and remove them one at a time untill the pinion feels correct. With a little oil on the bearings,I give the yoke a spin,as fast as I can, when the preload feels right the yoke will make about one revolotion, after you take your hand off of it.I realize this isn't the correct way,but I've built a lot of axles over the last twenty yrs and they never make noise, and dont fail.
A loose pinion will deff change pitch under drive/coast conditions,if you snug it up a little (carefully) and your noise goes away, and then comes back in a few days, your bearings are smoked.

I beleave my preload was good and with the crush sleeve I tighten the pinion nut slowly until I had no in an out travel in my yoke then I went just alittle more to get my rolling torque with in specs of 15-25 in. pounds

I could not find crush sleeve eliminator kit for the dana 35

I've never found that the crush collars have any issues but surely it is safer replacing the yoke seal without the collar.

Nothin like giving you bad advice,I cant seem to find a solid spacer either.I thought for sure I put one in my 35 when I put a trutrac in it.I cant believe they dont sell one for a 35,it's the most common thing for a chev 10 bolt,I put one in every axle I do.

Yep,best to pull it apart and check it out, parts are exspensive.

I will say that most pinion noise I have heard is from being to loose,or the bearings are on the way out.good luck.
