Default purchased a Cummins thanks for the info-updated with pic

I'm thinking about buying a 99 Dodge 2500 ext. cab with a 5.9 Cummins in it. It has 311,xxx on it. The trans was replaced with a Jasper trans @ 190,000. It needs a power steering pump and the brakes need some work. The truck has been just been sitting for the last yr. The guy selling it says its all stock and he hasn't had to do anything to it except for general maintenance stuff. He's asking $2800 for it. I've never owned a diesel before so I'm just looking for some input as to what kind of issues I can expect. Thanks for any useful info you would like to provide.

Great price for the truck if it's not totally rotted out and undrivable. If nothing else you could make money off it pretty easily. Biggest problem on that generation was the VP44 pump

yeh, that's what I've been reading. Does it seem odd that this truck has over 300,000 miles and that pump hasn't been replaced? the truck fired right up when I started it.

I don't know enough about the VP44 setup to be very helpful, I just know they're problematic. My truck is a common rail 5.9 so I have no real experience with it. I know my coworker has a 2002 with about 200k miles and he's on his 3rd VP44. But like I said and so did a few others, as long as it's not a POS, and it sounds like it's not, that's a great deal. Hopefully the underside isn't in too rough of shape from sitting so long....that doesn't do a vehicle any favors sitting that long

It is not supriseing that the pump lived that long if it has had fuel pressure its whole life. That is the key....the common problem is the lift pump dieing and the fuel pressure droping, which takes out the injection pump.

That is a pretty decent deal if the truck is what you hace described.

it's solid. I climbed all over under the truck. I was concerned that the floor boards might be gone. My biggest concern was the pump being original to the truck. Based on my research when it goes it's gonna cost appx $1200 to get it fixed.

If it is 4x4 I would buy it with no more than a title and seeing pictures.

it's 4x4. auto trans (replaced @ 190,XXX), ext. cab (4 door), 8ft. bed., needs tires and power steering pump. something going on with the breaks. the pedal is extremely stiff. No play at all.

Then waste no time, go buy it. I would seriously buy it today if it is as you describe.

When you fix the p/s pump that will take care of the overly stiff brake pedel.

Yeah they run a Hydro Boost system just like GM does on some vehicles. It SHOULD fix it providng there is no other brake issues. Sorry should have clarified that. Good luck and like others said jump on it. for that money it will be worth it.

Oddly enough I think I know what truck you are looking at. The only other thing I would check is if it has a "53 block". Google it, they are prone to cracking.

Even if it had a 53 block, still no reason not to buy it at that price. Bring cash, offer him $2500.00. and take it home,. IF you don't buy it please let me know because I will!
