Question 95 f150 stalled and wont start!?

i have a 95 4x4 I6 5spd f150 with 190k that has always ran strong and the other day i crossed a bumpy intersection and it made her sputter and stall. I tried starting it a few times and had a really loud backfire. i then noticed when i would turn the key on i couldn't hear fuel pump turn on. I called my brother to have him push me home with his bronco and when i got home and tried to start it i can clearly hear the fuel pump turning on and it will crank and crank but never start. changed the fuel filter and i turn key on with the filter disconnected to confirm it is pumping, i also depressed valve on fuel rail and confirmed there is fuel in the rail. Any body out there have any idea what could be wrong from these symptoms? Thanks in advance

If you are satisfied it is not a fuel problem then check for spark.

I would still check the fuel pressure though to be sure it is adequate.

Air fuel and spark are what it takes for an engine to run. Could be a bad ground or other wiring problem.

When you check for spark check your timing. The nylon timing gears may have given up the ghost.

i pulled the front plug and grounded it to check for spark and it has good spark. i also gave a few squirts of starting fluid down the throttle body assuming it should at least fire but that did nothing

My 4.9 randomly stopped running, ended up being a sheared pin in the distributer gear.

My 4.9 did the same thing, although mine ended up being timing gears. Check for compression. it may be different in different cylinders because the cam gear is broken and cam/lifters/valves are stuck and cant rotate. Get the steel cloyes gears and you will never have a problem again. pretty noisy though, but small price to pay for the ultimate in reliability.

Peek in oil cap and crank do you see rockers are moving or not.

Check with timing gun to see if timing is mess.
