Let Max close. Use either Smyly or Poorcello (or both) as the game 4 starter.

BOOM.
Managing is easy.

I'm surprised the tigers haven't called you yet.

Albequrque isn't consistent enough, Neither is smyly, max would be a good closer for this run but he just tweaked his shoulder, I'd be concerned about recovery time.

so our options include

smyly, not enough experience.
Albuquerqu - not consistent
benoit-gives up way to many homers
Valverde, not currently right
Dotel?
coke?
Did they keep villareal around for the post season roster?

I mean seriously, I think our only option is JV for every game.

Using Mad Max as the closer would mean LESS innings on a bad (sore) wing.

BOOM

Understood, but I would be more worried about recovery time, less volume is great, but with shorter recovery times it doesn't just equal right out....

No worries folks, Valverde said he's all good now. Nothing to see here, move along.

Valverde said he worked on his mechanics and fixed the problem -- a slow tempo -- and now he wants the ball, he wants to help this team.

"Thank God, I figured it out," Valverde said. "I feel great."

And I thought the problem was that he was throwing slow fast balls right over the plate.

After he choked on the A's, they were going over his pitch by pitch on Drew & Mike. Drew wsa talking to some number nerd, and they said if he's pitches 93mph or faster, his average was under .200, but less than 92mph and it was well above .300.

I noticed in the choke on saturday night that he was pretty much 91 and 92mph. He might have hit 93mph a couple of times.

yeah, I never would have thought the problem was him going through some retarded routine for a half hour before each pitch, I would have figured it more on serving up big cheese right over the plate pitch after pitch....unfortunately I didn't get to see saturday nights implosion

I'm wearing a cast and researching new TV's now that it's lunch time - thanks in part to Saturday's implosion...

I jest, but I also certainly don't consider myself fortunate to have witnessed that debacle.

I meant more in the fashion that I couldn't comment on John's observations of valverde serving up big fat cheesey poofs over the plate.

I know, the wording amused me though so I was literally compelled to comment.

Guess my medication isn't working today

All in all, the strike zone has been weird - although I also don't think that the TBS-SrikeZone grid is very accurate, and well their coverage sucks, including details such as the Audio feed (but that could be Charter's fault?)

At times there were a lot of pitches that tiger catcher's set up with their crotch/glove on the outside corner of the plate, and they didn't have to freaking move it - knee high and they couldn't get the call.

so on one hand, it seemed like we were forced to throw pitches more over the meat of the plate - but Valverde didn't seem to have much control in terms of varying location/height, etc., or zip on it either.

The TBS strike zone thing is horrendous.
It is no where near accurate.

I was listening to some group of talking heads from the baseball brass discuss this....they mentioned that it has put more pressure on the umpires, which has in turn created more bad calls, they argued that back in the day each ump had his own strike zone and it was the responsibility of the pitcher/batter to know that strike zone and the ump was more consistent through out the game because of this.

meh, I think its kinda neato, but don't think the umps should be criticized based on what it shows, they are pros, they know their strike zone, and they do a fairly good job being consistent.

I think consistency is all the players ask for.

Yeah...I lol'd at them.

There were pitches right down the middle, and that dumb tracker thing would show them as high and outside.

Technology is no good. We should not use any of it. After all, I'm sure the play at second was called correctly last night.

Who cares about the play at 2nd?
I'm positive had they called Infante out, the Yankees would have won 100-1....since, you know. They have been killing it.

Honestly, part of why I love baseball is that it is imperfect.
Blown calls are part of the game, for both teams.
Umps having their own strike zones is sweet...makes the pitcher/catcher respond.

I saw an interesting article earlier on ESPN that pointed out all the benefits the Yankees have had over the years with blown calls going their way.

I could see the argument if the Tigers won 3-1; but since they were shut out, what does it really matter?
