Default Crate Engine vs Building A Core

I have a unknown 99 small block Chevy that may be questionable, I don't know the history on it. It's a toss up weather to have that built or get a plain jane crate from GM Performance. I'm thinking money wise, it would be better to get the crate since I need all the outside stuff; ignition, intake/carb and a bunch of misc parts regardless of what I do. This will be going in a driver. The engine I have is a roller motor but the vortec heads are junk.

I'm leaning to the crate. Figure approx $1500.00 for it vs whatever the machine shop would charge if the block is any good on the engine I have.

Hmmmm.............

I'd go crate. I'm gonna put a crate motor in my TJ in the next year I hope with a M22 Rockcrusher 4spd. Got the trans, just need the motor! Also, where did you get your avatar. I love it lmao

If you need it all go with the GM turn key crate engine. Faster and easier than parts gathering and it has a warranty.

It's better off in a car, the ratios suck for off road.

Myself, I'm going with crate, but I'm looking at Gen IV stuff, and I'm finding that most junkyards want more money for a 6.2 liter than a brand new LS3 costs.

I believe Car Craft did a couple articles (one this month) about starting with a crate 350 from GMPP, then doing some upgrades to it.
