Ive got a 96 ram with the 5.9 (gas) running 35's. I'm looking to gear it. It has 3.55 stock and need more grunt. I was thinking about going with 4.56 but im also considering 4.88. Would 4.88 be too steep? Also where is the best place in s.e mi to get them installed for a good price?

what i would do...

is use a site like novak adapters and find your transmission gear ratios. then use this calculator (http://www.csgnetwork.com/multirpmcalc.html) to mauall enter and find out what RPM range your motor will be in at speeds you drive your rig. you would know where peak fuel economy is in your RPM range. if its offroad only, go deep.

488 will be way to low of a gear. I'd go with 410s if you plan to drive it in the highway at all.

Also look up Ron's machine shop. Great prices

410s for sure 488 is too much for dd on 35s

id go 4.56 at 65 mph the engine would be at +/- 1965 rpms
4.88s & 35"s at 65 mph would spin the engine at +/- 2100 rpms
4.10s & 35"s at 65 mph would spin the engine at +/- 1765 rpms

i ran 4.10s and 36"s (the 1" is much different), and then 37"s and it was a dog on the expressway, i have 37"s and 4.88s now and it like it was stock.

i have a 99 Ram 5.9 1500 with 35's im installing 4.56's literally as we speak. a lot of the guys on dodgetruck forum recommend that as well. As far as south east michigan, i think Kevin at Jeeperz Creeperz is the go to guy for gear installs.

hmm ill have to give him a call on monday. Its a little bit of a drive but if the price is right it would be worth it. DTS quoted me 1600 and Ring & Pinion 1400. any other options closer to macomb twp?

That was a estimate for parts and labor to do the install..

seems a little high... unless your adding lockers, $1000 is pretty reasonable for two gear sets, install kits, maybe a carrier, and labor.

but if it comes with a warranty, and your ok with the price. go for it. i always like to shop around, pit one shops price against another. lol.

No lockers just ring and pinion swap.

there may be carrier breaks... idk what your at now, nor am i familiar with your rear (axle). im sure you got it figured out.

someones got to say it... unless you plan to simply weld up the spiders or add lunchboxes to it, now is the time to add a locker.

It has 3.55's in them i believe the only one i need to worry about is the d44 up front. id like to do a locker but idk yet.

FYI, the carrier break on the Chrysler 9.25 is 2.76 / 3.07

You will also find that 488 gears for that axle are impossible to find currently.
