And yes- it is a substantial penalty to cancel.

I worked for them one day.. was going door to door.. they literally told me "you want to make the customer think they are getting a hell of a deal when there really not". The guys were also smoking a blunt and drinking jack while driving down to detroit and then they dropped me off in the projects at 7pm in the winter time to go door to door.. good thing I was with a black guy. Needless to say I worked 12 hours.. didnt make a penny and didnt show up the next day lol

Picture from pre-3 kids?

Wait...that could be 70's bush. Nevermind. However it would verify the question.

In a market where gas costs are increasing, an alternate supplier makes sense, since you generally have a fixed cost for a period of time.

In a market (like the current one) where NG costs are decreasing, a utility is better because the GCR will drop with the market, while the alternative supplier has you locked into a fixed rate. As stated, you're betting on increasing NG prices with an alternative supplier (many of whom are actually out-of-state utilities for those who want to "stick it to the evil, monopolistic utility company").

Also consider terms - most alternate suppliers charge sizeable exit fees if you decide to leave before the end of your contract.

With the discovery of the "new Saudi Arabia of NG" in shale deposits in the PA/NY/OH/WV area, I expect NG pricing to remain soft for a while.

Yes, many companies charge an exit fee. However, Bishop does not. So sounds like this might be the way to go. They have a lifetime chart of their price compared to consumers and they've never been more.

I'd verify that info. 'They' can say anything.

Still pissed my wife got suckered.

They come door to door about twice a year in my neighborhood. I always have to end up telling them that I don't have natural gas run to my house. The last one that was here wanted to argue with me about it but since he was standing outside I just closed the door.

The door to door assholes irritate me far more than the guys that stick shit on my mailbox.

I kinda wonder what the legalities are to what they are doing.

We had a company come through our neighborhood a few weeks ago, Just Energy, they were saying they were checking to see if we got a rebate from our gas company(which we had). They asked to see a copy of our bill, I noticed the clipboard he was holding Acct numbers, usage rates, current bill price and other information from other homeowners. I refused to show them my bill, I asked if they worked for the Gas company, they again told me they were just checking on rebates that SEMCO was supposed to give. I told them goodbye shut the door. Something didn't seem right, Googled them and found out they were a secondary supplier. Like other said they set your rate at a set amount and it stays the same over the period you sign for, but there is a hefty cancelation fee after 90 days and if prices go lower you still pay more. I felt they were misrepresenting themselves, called the police. They ended up telling them to leave the area, as several other people complained about them. I complained to Semco, the MRC and Just Energy, I got a dirty letter from Just Energy saying my complaints were unfounded even though I had the employees name and he made it seem as though he was working for SEMCO. The company that is Just Energy has changed names several times and has many complaints against them for signing up seniors others who don't understand what they are signing up for. They also have complaints of misleading business practices.

I wouldn't sign up for a secondary supplier seem kind of shady if you do some digging.

There are some scams out there. I know several folks using Bishop, including school districts and believe they are legit. Substantial cost savings, for several years in a row. I'm in the boonies with propane as the only option, else I'd have first hand experience.
