Default Nickle Plating Frame/cage

Has any one ever had there buggy frame or frame in general Nickle plated?

It seems that by dipping it you could not only coat the outside but also the inside of the tube/frame providing superior corrosion protection over powder coating or just painting. This would be done from a environment protection standpoint I don't care what the finish looks like as long as I don't need to think about it rusting in 10 years. Looking more in the line of a industrial nickle plating coating like they use on machinery or pipes.

I know most buggy frames don't have a life of more then a few years. That comparison was simply to point out that it could treat the inside of the tube. In the application of a frame off restoration that you want to last and not do again for 20 or so years nickle seems like a great choice.

I plan on using DOM and MIG welding the entire buggy.
Is there any steps during the construction of a buggy frame that would affect the nickle plating?
Such as a type of welding rod used or type of steel. It is probably nothing to think about but if the plating weakens the welds somehow. I don't see how plating copper coating over a copper/steel melted bead could affect the weld. The concern lies more in the acid cleaning and any containment in the weld that would be cleaned away leaving a void in the weld which would lead to a crack. Yes I am over thinking this. I would rather over think and plan this out before hand then find out later that need to rebuild because I did not use the right type of wire proving less fatigue during cleaning process.

Majority of your tubes, if not all will not have open ends to get the nickel in anyway and they have a decent primer coating that should cover any issues to begin with

Nickle will rust. Have it galvanized then paint it. Will never rust as long as you don't ever have to weld on it again.

My brother had it done to the jeep he has been building for 7 years... It was fairly inexpensive if I recall, and he had it done in the Toronto, Ontario area... So really y not too far for someone from Michigan....
I think he had it galvanized so it wouldn't rust out before he finished it....

By the time you get all the other stupid shit built for it the frame will be a pile of rust anyways.

Now that you mention it I do remember hearing that. I've never seen many rusty guardrails though.

It will rust that's all that was needed.

Was just looking at the low cost and was wondering if someone has tried it. If applied wrong or to thin it would bubble and pit causing the metal underneath to rust no doubt about that.

Yes my progress is slow. Progress is happening but actually sticking to a budget and placing more important items ahead of this and other builds can be a pain. PJ was a idea that was a stepping stone. I realized that it simply did not make sense to keep the dimensions of a CJ despite how much I wanted to. It furthered the design of the buggy which is very similar in many regards. Yes the point about the frame being a pile of rust is exactly why I am only in the assembling the power train stage. I have had less then 8 hours actual wrench time with this thing. Most of that time was finding and organizing stuff. I ordered a new bell housing/clutch assembly in January to replace the 350/420 I currently have. Once the engine and transmission are mated I can build a stand making attaching accessories and running the engine easier. That is all I have planned for this year. Progress is slow but still moving.

I get your point about this crazy ideas stuff though. Defiantly need to keep this junk to myself and test it out on something before asking advise from strangers hoping one of them already had a similar experience. Just a matter of you guys(and girls) have already built, wrecked, and experimented with there junk and have experience that could save time and money. Will keep the crazy stuff to myself. I do respect members on here a great deal. Enough to make a azz out of myself asking the stupid things I have in the past.

Well all except Hancho.
Sure I could peek into the political forum and snag a few gems you have placed on here. But, I'm better then that.

Back on topic. The plating will rust, don't do it, enough said.

Yeah, I dunno anything about treating metal, but it didn't work so well for the YJ
