Shit, while we're on the topic - if roughly 67% of crude is converted into gasoline, what ratio of energy input is needed to distill it vs. the remaining stock that diesel comes from?

Further yet, where does that energy come from? Coal fired plants? Internal-combustion driven generators? Combustion of a % of the product?

I'd much rather admit ignorance on a topic than try to bullshit you folks on things I don't know enough about.
You took me serious?????????

Waste heat recovery is right around the corner...tons of R&D is being done on it right now....

The one thing that I don't think has been entirely mentioned here is price point. All this technology takes $$$ to develop, which means increased vehicle prices on top of what no one can afford anyhow...The technology is out there for a 100mpg car that has a 5 star crash rating - it's just too damn costly to produce

Scot is one of the most well informed guys on this board, or for that matter, anyone I know. His research is impeccable and it's very rare where he even needs to say I don't know. So, I just took that rare opportunity to poke at him a little. He deserves it.

You on the other hand,

As of now the only thing that I've seen lately that interest me is a diesel hydraulic hybrid. Diesel engine doesn't see the loads in a hydraulic hybrid to need any after treatment for emissions and with some creative thinking and hydraulic motors at each wheel you have lockers, no drive shafts, unlimited crawl capability, and if done in a creative manor 15" of ground clearance in the center ..

I almost forgot the potential of 13-18% fuel economy improvement over a comparable conventional diesel powered vehicle with normal drivetrain.
