Default 97 powerstroke do i have a problem?

i am still fairly new to diesels and have also recently moved from up north out in the country to right in the city. truck is a 97 powerstroke crew cab long box on 35's. up north.it was long distances between everything and now im 6 miles from work and rarly ever get above 45mph. i went from 17-18 mpg down to 12-13. im assuming this is from driving styles but should i be looking for other issues? thanks in advance

short trips are not ideal for diesels. They are built to work hard all the time.

I'll bet that has alot to do with your fuel mileage decrease. I know my semi never gets warmed up. soon as it has oil pressure i'm driving it. it heats up faster that way anyways. i timed it one day when it was 30 out, i started it up from dead cold and let it run for 30 minutes. it wasn't even up to 125 degrees by that point. then next day i started it up and drove it right away. 125 in 5 and 180 in 10 minutes.

On very cold mornings I put my truck on High idle which is 1k RPM ( I have a TS 6 position chip that allows this), and I also have a switch to shut the EBV valve which keeps the exhaust in the engine longer and doubles as an exhaust brake when towing.

It warms up in less than 5 mins.

I know this is an old post, but Im bored.

#1 stop warming your truck up, that is where 1/2 your problem is. Get in, start and drive
#2 any vehicle will get worse mileage if you only drive short trips, even little gassers that are in open loop for 1/2 the trip

I dd my 7.3 .....it sucks. Long trips pulling a loaded trailer I get better mpg then 5 mile around town trips. Would love to have a little town hopper, just not in the budget.

fyi......I only warm mine up in the winter, summer I get in and go.
