Water purification.

I think the loss of power and prescription drugs will kill off enough people outside of the original mishap to justify stability after a few months.

If anything maybe a event would get the parents to stop coking up there kids with ADHD medication.

I'm pretty sure if the Earth's only survivors are the people in this show and the homeless people I want to go in the first round of check outs...

My prepping includes a good portable welder and guns. When the shit hits the fan I will head for the nearest Wal-Mart supercenter and weld the doors shut.

Problem with this show is that it is TV. Even NatGeo recognizes that the average 'prepper' who keeps a few weeks worth of necessities on hand in case of emergency makes for a boring show. You have to get the extremes to get people to watch.

During the blackout in 2003, our neighborhood turned it into a block party. If something like that happened again it would likely be the same. We had a stretch of wacko renters but it's settled in to the usual percentage of nutjobs.

Isnt water purification just boiling it? Is there more to it?

If you boil and collect the vapor and condense it you have about as close to pure h2o as you can get- distilled water.

Given her roots I'm surprised that you have to explain the concept of a still to her...
