Default Trail Bike Under $1500 ??

Thinking about getting a couple of bikes for my son and I. Cheap fun, trail riding, not looking to spend allot of money. Looking to get bikes and gear for around $3000 total for both. I have a motor bike (1979 CB750), my son is 18, has very little motorcycle experience. I weigh 185 my son probably 215. What would be good options?

I really liked my 95 atk 250 for a first dirt bike. It would still be my bike if I didn't over do it at the dunes. Decent power but it was air cooled and didn't have a power valve. Would probably be a good bike for you son. I'm about the same size.

just keep checking craigslist. now that it's warming up, it's probably going to be harder to find the deals. I had tons of fun on a 1000$ Honda XR200r. The XR series would be good to check out, Yamaha TTR's, Kawasaki KLX's, Suzuki DR's. I would say get the newest, best taken care of 4 stroke 250's you can get your hands on for your price range.

Honda XR250
Honda XR400
Kawasaki KDX200
Kawasaki KDX220

Those are probably your best bets for finding a nice budget trail bike. The Honda's are reliable old school, air cooled four strokes; the Kawasaki's are factory built, trail oriented two strokes. Both are pretty popular (cheap/plentiful replacement parts) and tame enough for trail cruising.

'02 for what seems like a real good price if it's not been hammered on: http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/mcy/2782939781.html
'03 for a quite a bit more, but bikes are hard to sell in winter so you have some buying power: http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/mcy/2811656294.html

That 02 KDX seems like a real good deal there is a 1994 for auction on Ebay that is already at $1525. It has been "restored" but, WTH?

KDX's came with headlights, I'm curious why that 02 on c-list is missing it.

Xts are reliable, but a little more street oriented with dated suspension.I think almost any xr/xl or kdx would suit your needs. If you spent a little more money you could get a pair of klx250fs,they are a small, street legal dirt bike. You wouldnt believe how convenient it is having a plate on your bike.
If you could find an older yamaha wr200,they are a really nice trail bike, two stroke air cooled, stay away from the rare liquid cooled two stroke wr,they are hard to get parts for.Any yamaha ttr would work also.
Good luck, see ya on the trails.

I agree with you on the XT, and the KLX (that's mine below), but he wants two bikes + gear for 3k. He'd probably be spending the whole budget on one KLX.

I have been seeing 06-07 klxs for close to $2000,beyond his budget for sure.If he can stretch it a little, might find a couple.
I almost bought a klx,but went with a wr250f,for a little more power,and a bunch more preventetive maintenence.

I'm a 2 stroke guy. There's alot of 125-250cc smokers for sale on CL Around $1500 or less for nice bikes. Look for YZ,KX,RM,CR or KTM SX's also the KTM xc and Exc are nice bike's. Everybody thinks 4 poke's are the be all end all for bike's and quads. Well try tearing one down when you've broke something and get out your check book, credit and second mortgage if you blow one up, and they do blow up more frequently than you think. When an oil burner finally pops you have a couple hundred$$ for a new piston and rings, bore and some gaskets. A 2 stroke tuned right will run a long time. They need rings every couple seasons and maybe a piston here and there, but in the long run they are cheaper to maintain than a 4 stroke. I know im gonna catch heat for this, but I really don't care people that think four stroke's are a huge improvement over 2's are on the band wagon already. There's also just something about that 2 stroke sound and the smell of burnt 927 or r-50 race oil.

I couldn't agree with you more on this. Everybody I know is switching to 4 strokes. Probably why all the 2 strokes on cl are so cheap. But I'm looking to take advantage of that while I can. You blow up a 4 stroke and the bare head alone is close to $700 if not more, unless you manage to find a decent used one. Hell for that you could do a complete upper/lower rebuild and then some on a 2 stroke.

You have for a while, right? You may need to lower your price a bit. I bought that exact bike last fall, with a few hundred less miles for $1150 cheaper in mint condition. The only thing that bugged me was that he cut the rear fender like you did.

Edit, looks like you dropped it to 3k, here.
