Default 518 rebuild

Ok i will eventually get around to rebuilding my 518 trans (probly xmas time i hope) and was looking for advise from anyone that has done them before. Do you need any specialty tools? Were do i put the breather tube? Is the overdrive unit as bad to work with as i have heard? And were sould i get the kit (i am a poor college student that likes trucks more than food and cost is an issue) Any other tips that you may have? Thanks in advance

yes you will need speacialty tools if you want to do it right. especially with the OD unit. some times when it comes to the cheap route is to save your $$$ and do it right the first time. just my .02

Talk to Russ Leonard in the auto building. He may be able to get you some parts or even a kit for cheap through a distributor. The trans and drivetrain lab has about every special tool imaginable that has to do with transmissions and such. He might let you use some of the tools in the lab. I can't remember what program you're in up here, but if you know him already that'll help, since he probably won't do all that for a stranger.

ya im in auto trans right now if we do a 46re im going to ask to bring mine in since it's pretty much the same anyway other than it's not electric.

I want to do it right thats why i havent done it yet. Is the overdrive unit the only part that needs special tools? other than that unit sticking off the end it's pretty much a 727 isnt it?

thanks

yes it is... You will need an assorment of bushing installers to replace the bushings, to do the job correctly.

i rebuilt mine and the only thing i needed was a press to get the over drive unit appart. Mine is working fine and i didnt have any specialty tools. I thought it was really simple and I did it before I had auto trans. i just got a rebuild kit from auto value and that was it. did it in my shop at home... shoot me a message if ya need help.

its only got like 5000 miles since it was last rebuilt. everything worked forward. I'm betting i could get away with only a low/reverse band but i might as well do it all while its apart i think. thanks for the offer ryan but im going to be doing at home and thats quite a ways from G.R.
