The guy say's he has riding experience which means he should be able to get on anything and pick it up rather quickly , so again I say get the 450 and be done with it , no more wondering did I get the right bike (buy one and done) !! The nice thing with the new 4 stokes is that you dont have to ride wide open like you would with a 2 stroke !! So you can putt around or go balls out !! I also used to race MX " hence 127 " and trail ride and go to the dunes and ect.... I always had the attiude that where ever I was If I needed the power , it was there !! Im just telling him what I would do if it was me !! Now having said all that , liv2mx is right if your on a dirt bike , no matter what it is , your having fun !!

From what I gather, he is great at two things in life, and one of those things is dirt bike maintenance.

you don't want a 250f for trail riding only. they are fun and you can go real fast on one, but they are NOT RELIABLE.!
daves bike would be a good one kelly. for tight single track a 300 ktm is the king. for all around get a 450.
Weather you have ridden for that long or not, I dont think your facts are straight... My 250f NEVER EVER had a SINGLE problem, or let me down in any way whatsoever. Started first kick every single time I rode it. As for a single track, depending on how tight it is, you may be right, but there are other bikes that would be just as fast. Unless its a wide open trail, anyone can be just as fast as the next weather on a 125, or a 500. Its ALL about the rider.

its like riding a 125 2 stroke. you need to be on that clutch extremely hard i all the time and rev the hell out of it.
I realize that racing on the track you are always on the rev limitet. You are also buying a new bike every year and rebuilding motors between races.trail riding is a lot different and Im plenty fast for an old guy,and never hit the rev limiter.I realize you use the clutch a lot more to keep the motor in the zone on a 250,Im hard on my clutch because I ride my bike like a trials bike.Im always trying to climb stuff I cant,I fall down alot.
I have freinds that work out, said I should go to the gym.I bought a dirt bike instead, and named it GYM.

If you ride like Erin, a 250F doesn't last long. If you ride like a n00b - a 250F will go a hell of a long time. My wife isn't the easiest on her bike and the piston in her CRF250X went 187 hours with no problem.

with the guys that ride with me in the single tracks have heard me hit the rev limited several times in the higher gears. ive been told i ride my 450 like a 2 stroke. i use the clutch sometimes and ride it hard enough to make fast lap times in the woods. ive out grown racing mx and still ride the track from time to time. i like woods riding. i like hitting the track with the 450s as they are fun as hell and i jump everything. i like the power of the 450 but a 250 or 300 would be better for a rookie in the dirt. michigan has a ton of sand and i dont care if you can get on a street bike and ride 500 miles in a day and still wanna ride. once you get on a 450 in the sand it WILL make you tired. as scooter has said. big bikes will wear you out easly in the sand. i ride mine alot! 2 years ago i was riden 3 to 4 times a week in the sand single tracks to train for the hare scrambles. on the track a 450 is easier to ride then a 250f. a 450 will make you lazy on the track cause you dont have to shift or clutch as much. makes you a lazy rider when all you have to do is grab a hand full. riding in the woods and on the track is 2 different things.
