I don't know how much effort I'd put into repairing a car that's almost 20 years old and wasn't worth a shit to begin with.

This.

The question you should be asking is how in the fukc did i end up with a piece of shit 16 year old beretta in the first place. I'm hoping you got it for free so just scrap it and walk away happy.

It depends, your probably going to be 150 to 175 into it in just the gasket kit so there would be other factors to consider. I would consider the mileage on the engine and trans, condition of the body, and the maintenance records for the car if you have them. You could be nearing the time when other somewhat expensive components are due like the timing chain, front and rear struts, and other chassis and steering components.

So assess the overall condition of the car and go from there. If this is not something your willing to put another $400 to $1200 into at some point (and this would be if you were doing the labor on all of these other parts down the road) then i would get the couple hundred in scrap for it and find something else.

Holy shit....lots of people chimeing in....

I have a 98 Monte carlo (my sn is from my old 85 monte not this one) and it had 185,000 on it but ran great until the head gasket went. Never overheated bad and was caught and stopped driving early. Bought the car for 1000 bucks and wasnt sure to fix it or not, and ended up fixing it and glad I did. It was a pain but it payed off cause now my car runs better than it ever did and everything inside was pretty dencently clean and besides getting heads tested and time its not bad. If you got the time and space to do it this time of year then great, wouldnt mess with it if it was overheated bad. If it was I would just junk it or find a new motor because it would suck to change them out only to find your heads are worped. Mine had the 3.1 v6. But im glad I fixed my car cause Ive put another 10 thousand trouble free miles on it after that. Still is running like a champ for me.
