Trading in vs selling it yourself.

I am looking at buying a newer truck in the near future. I was considering just trading in my old truck but I would get more selling it outright. what do the vehicle guru's of gl4x4 say to this issue?

That's one of my biggest hold ups with selling yourself. not to mention you have to take the time to sell it which is hard for me since i work a lot and work far away from home.

Exactly right!

If you have your ducks in a row and know what you are after, you can get just as much or real close to it as selling the vehicle yourself. It's all part of the game. I traded in my 2010 FX4 with 30,000 miles for a new 2011 two months ago, they gave me exactly what I paid for the 2010 last year.

I trade in realizing I am taking a hit. Its just not worth it to me to deal with people who call but don't show up, nit pick, or lowball

It probably depends a lot on the dealership where you are trading it in at as well huh? I have found the exact truck I want, but its at a used car lot and they tend to be kind of sheisty.

If you're okay with losing money, then trade it in. Keep in mind you usually pay a premium on used vehicles at the dealership too, so you get fucked twice. :highfive:

But lately I have heard some people getting decent values for their trade-ins, so you could make out okay.

They are on the high end price wise but I have cash and a trade in so I feel I am in a good position to negotiate. I am willing to take a small hit on price since this truck is what I want and its very nice.

i personally would sell myself then use the cash as a bargaining tool. any dealer will try to stiff you on a trade in if they can. since your situation is different then most because of your working conditions a trade in probably would work better for you even though you probably will get stiffed on the new vehicle at least slightly.

I don't deal with car dealerships of any kind, nor will I ever buy another brand new vehicle again. Ever.

When you live in a county with 1400 people in it you are hard pressed to find private sellers.

Right now NOTHING is selling in the private sale area. If you can work out a decent deal through a dealership, go for it! No one has any cash right now around here and like Hancho said- dealing with a nit-picking asshole sucks!

That seems like all I've done lately.....

Be careful that they aren't covering the price of your trade in their asking price. Sometimes the dealership will have a higher price on the vehicle because they know its likely to have a trade come into play. So you'd pay an extra $1000 for the vehicle and then they'd show you an extra $1000 on the value of your trade. Basically you'd be paying the higher value of your trade yourself

I've only ever bought one new vehicle (still own it today, 01 Sahara). And I did trade in a car for it, but the car was a real turd.
I don't see myself buying a new car anytime within the next 15 years. So, keep trying to sell it yourself. There are plenty of saps out there like myself that need your used crap without dealing with shitty used car salesmen.

If its something stock, run of the mill I'd say trade it. If its something custom and modified I'd say private party is probably the way to go.

I have to say though after dealing with the, "Well ya know I can get a much nicer truck from so and so for half the price...", guys when I was selling my last truck I decided the extra couple dollars I'd get back isn't worth playing used car salesman.
