Very cool! Please tell me you're not going to cut the dash.

What are the plans for it's future?

first things first....

cut the dash.

not going to cut the dash. a p.o. was kind enough to bend the tabs in for the radio, not cut them out, so we just had to pull them back flush.

plans are get the rear door off, get it to some guy to repair the rust. get the patched floor and seat mount fixed. get both rear wheel wells fixed (a couple very small through spots of rust. the next problem is do we take the hard top off. it has never been off as the foam is not split between the tub and cab. the roll bar is gouged up and need some work, as does the tub around the roll bar mounts. kinda hard to fix that stuff, then possibly get the floor lined with a top on holding the roll bar in. not going to do a frame off at this point, just contain the body rust since the frame and underside of the body (outside of the drivers floor) is 99% solid. get some seat risers and seatbelts from craigs's pick and pull. got some skinny rims that will be painted black and probably get some 9.5/10.5 wide 33"/34" tires. new fender flares, and white paint. hopefully get it on the road this spring/summer.

long term, would like to find another 1986 cj dana 44 and do a rear axle upgrade like we did with the cj7 (gears and locker).

***UPDATE***

I started it and drove it outside to let it idle this afternoon.

And I did find another 1986 dana 44 for it last year. It is in the garage not installed.

Found it on alaska4x4network.com

Had it shipped here from anchorage in a container on a ocean freighter to Sea/Tac, then on a car hauler to MI.

They made about 230 of these. With production numbers that low, it's one of the rarer Jeeps ever made, IMO. This one is in VERY good shape...I spent about an hour crawling under it, inspecting it, and trying not to drool on it.

Glad to hear you got it fired up yesterday, Kevin.

I almost bought one of those last year but the guy couldn't find the title, never had the title in his name, and couldn't remember the name of the original owner.

Seemed kinda shady but I really wanted that thing.

Just found this thread. Great to see the plans for it and I don't recall seeing that many photos on cj-8.com

Good deal on finding the D44, nice little upgrade for a nice ride.

Yours is mostly in much better condition than mine overall. I need to do the driver's floor this year and that will mean some patching on the side as well... have to start before it gets any worse as my plywood patch is not cutting it anymore

You have to remove the top. The blind spots just kill you and it's easier for people to see that you're driving on the wrong side when topless

It's also a heavy mother and it drives much better without it on there. Try to keep it in one piece when you take it off. Mine's never fit right once I broke it all the way down and I'm sad/pissed every time I try to put it back on in the fall (I had no choice if I didn't want to leave it on all year unfortunately). I really need to refurbish it if I want to keep using it (with winter salt keeping mine parked up here, I may not bother putting it back on though).

Can't wait to see it in person so we can check each other's out

Lookin' good, Kevin. Where are the pics of the recent bodywork, though.
