Default 4418 PAC Racing / Motor City Machines 2012 KOH Thread

PAC Racings springs has committed to stepping up big again with Motor City Machines for the 2012 season, and Mike and the rest of the team hopes to have an even better year. I will be grabbing photos of the preparation for the 2012 King of the Hammers race and plan to continue on with us heading out to the lake bed and for updates out there.

As a summary for 2011, Motor City Machines built up a new chassis for the 2011 KOH race. We finished up the final details and did some prerunning on the lake bed. A fan gremlin plauged Mike during the race causing multiple stops, but he was able to finish in 32nd after starting in 49th.

Returning back to Michigan, the car was prep'd for some local racing in the TREC series at the Badlands. After finishing 2nd and 3rd in the first two races of the year, we were pumped to head to the Rausch Creek Qualifier. Unfortunately it turned out to be one of those weekends.

We arrived with a well prepped car, but on the first day of prerunning one of the pit crew ended up a the local ER for a late night visit for a severely pinched nerve in his neck and he would spend the rest of the weekend on pain pills and wearing a flea collar. The night before the race, Mike's borther (and also co-driver) was riding out, and the driver of the car fell asleep at the wheel and totaled the car. We got to go collect both of them and we made it back just in time for Mike and his brother to suit up and race. They finished a tough first lap but then lost reverse on the 2nd lap.

With a fresh trans, Mike was able to knock out a win and two 3rds in the summer TREC races, and he gained the season points lead that he would never lose. The racing was helping to get the car dialed in and after working with Spal, he was finally able to get the right fan and the overheating issues were gone. The suspension was getting dialed in to the point that Mike was feeling a bit more horsepower was needed over his bone stock LS2.

For the final race of the TREC season, Mike would guarantee a spot into the 2012 King of the Hammers and the TREC series points win if he won the race. There were 17 drivers that came out for the race and it ended up being an usually dry track with more dust seen than at any other TREC race. Mike pushed throught the dust, drove through a potential race ending hit that bent the front of his chassis by 3/4", and locked it up with the win.

So now the 2012 race season is getting started after some down time with the family and for some hunting. The garage pace has been starting to pick up since Turkey Day and Mike is getting ready for next season. The chassis is stripped and the front end is rebuilt to fix the tweak and get a little bit more uptravel. The chassis will get a thorough check out, and anything that needs maintenence will get done while it's all blown apart.

Mike has been working with Trick Flow and it will be getting a new set of their CNC ported heads, PAC Racing Springs, and a new cam on his LS2. Hopefully we can get some dyno sheets to show what the combo can do.

A new Atlas with 2.0 low range is also going in, replacing the 3.0 unit from last year. Hopefully this will allow more top end in low range for the tight races and save some t-case shifting.

Last night we made up the list of what to get done, and of course the list looks daunting, but we are happy to be well ahead of where we were last year at this time. Our goal is to have the car race ready in the trailer a week before the race, so we can get some relaxation in before the 36 hour drive out starting Feb 3.

Hopefully after that, we'll leave the driving to Branik with the Beast of the East program!

Also, if you are on Facebook then also check out the Motor City Machines page. Lots of photos as the car gets tagged at races and Mike tends to push photos there from his phone.

You guys going to have a tracking system this year at all? Cell coverage at all out there? Maybe strap a cell phone to the car and let us see where it's at on the google or something.

the main reason I dont not plan to run this year. They want $300 to rent the SAT tracker and another $180 for the mount and antenna...that should be optional like it was in the past...oh, well I will still be there...booked the flight today

if thats the diff between racing and not, you shouldn't race and I think you made the right choice. Racing is expensive and always underestimated the time, resources, and money required. its a safety item - my understanding is that it knows if you wad up hard and will send a maday back to camp with your location so they can come help you...im annoyed by the expense, but really its worth it in my mind.

There were several reason not to run KOH...the SAT tracker tipped the scale. As much as I'd like to run, I can't justify the cost of KOH and you have to draw a line somewhere. I will have the RZR out there, but DJ and I plan on fucking around in the desert
